Starter motor problem question

I drive my FD only a couple days a year, otherwise it sits covered in a garage. When I drove it about a month ago, it started and ran OK, but when I parked it for 5 minutes and then attempted to start it, it would not engage the starter. No click, no sound, no dimming of lights. I had the car towed home and checked the safety switch on the clutch and it appeared to be OK, since jumping it did not engage the starter solenoid. Since the solenoid was almost as expensive as the entire starter, I replaced the entire starter with solenoid and for good measure also the safety switch on the clutch pedal. This appeared to fix the problem, since it started repeatedly. I parked it again. Yesterday I decided to check the AC and let the car idle and warm up while I added a can of R134. I switched the car off, put away my tools and decided to take the car out for a drive. It would not start. I allowed the engine to cool off for about 4 hours and then it started. Before I go blind reading the factory wiring diagram, does anyone know if there is another solenoid or safety switch that would cause the no-start condition when the car is hot? I have had the car for over 15 years and this no-start problem is new.

It could be the relay for the security system, I think when it acts up you'll get that exact issue.

Pull the driver's side kick panel, there should be a relay there, has a 6-pin plug on the bottom. The two heavy gauge wires are to the starter. Just use a same-gauge jumper wire and jump those 2 wires.

I've had a similar problem, even replaced the relay and sometimes it would act a fool. Bypassed it and never looked back. That's the relay that keeps someone from starting the car if the alarm has been triggered.

Thanks, Dale. I found a starter cut out relay on the wiring diagram and thought that might be the problem. My shop manual has a test procedure to see if the relay is bad. I'll check it, but may also use your suggestion to bypass it. RA

starter-alarm relay problem

Well, I finally got around to checking this out. Just want to make sure I am picking the correct wires to jump. Can someone comment before I pick the wrong ones and make things worse? Which is the starter relay?

From your picture, disconnect the blue connector from H302. You'll notice four wires that make up the blue connector. You want to jump the two largest wires of the four; blue-black & blue-white. That will remedy your problem of random no-starts.

Note: For a genuine OEM fix, you'll need to replace the rectangular black box located to the right of H302 (w FD01 stenciled on it). This box is known as CPU2.

Hope this info helps!

So is the FD01 box, CPU2, containing the starter cut relay?

A bad CPU2 can affect starting issues as this CPU contains components related to the car's security alarm.
