Question Starter Motor

When I left work earlier my igntion jammed in the start position and I didnt realise till I got home. When I try to start it now the starter motor wont even turn over. Is it possible that any serious damage could have been done to the engine (e.g. rebuild). Another thing that concerns me is that there is a white/grey powder on some parts of the engine?

worst thing would be the flywheel gears messed up

just check starter. That's prolly the only real problem

Thanks

not difficult

2 bolts that hold it in and the positive terminal (disconnect battery) if i remember right.

shouldn't take more than 30min.

it takes about 5 mins to take off hehe (well thats how fast i can take it off, recently i had some trouble with mines). in the beginning though, you might take longer, took me about 30 mins to figure out one of the bolts is not screwed in to the block but is actually held on by a nut on the other side of the tranny housing hehe i though i just stripped the hell out of that nut. in anycase, before removing the starter, disconnect the battery so you dont run yourself over if you accidently jump the terminal and your in gear. also, when you take apart the starter, make markings on the outside of the starter so you put it back together correctly, if you put it back 180 degrees out of phase, it will spin in the opposite direction and just confuse the crap out of you for about 3+ days hehe (it happened to me). new starters run about 300+ bucks but a rebuilt one can be had for as low as 180 or so. i suggest takign yoru starter to someplace like checkers or napa and have them eletronically test it (its free so why not ).

on a side note, our starters are made by mitsubishi so dont be alarmed to see a tristar stamp on the starter

also note that if you have 2 people, its much easier to get the starter communiator into the brushs!!!

BTW: how in the heck did your ignition get stuck open/on?

P.S. the service manual does not give a picture of how to take apart a manual fd starter, only the auto. check iluvmyrx7.com for the parts fische to get pics of how a manual fd starter looks ike and how to take it apart.

also, you must have the starter connected to the starter solonoid inorder to test if the solonoid is throwing the pinoin gear foward (something which confused the hell out of me for about 3 days)

good luck

Isn't that the biggest PITA in the world? I spent like 5 minutess spinning that damn bolt until I realized it was't moving. Why the hell did they do that!?

In any case, starter is easy to change. In the meantime, hit it with a hammer before you try cranking the engine. They usually work after a few good whacks.

it's on the fc too

it's used to hold the starter cable/ harness in place on the other side.
