Yep. Now figure out why it was powdercoated yellow and you'll have accomplished something useful.

jimlab u bring up a good point why is it powdercoated yellow....my guess is mazda didnt what the spare to be black because all other spares made by other manufactures were black. this is why they painted it yellow to be different just like the rotary engine.

so whats the answear?

Don't ask me. I've owned my RX-7 for over 5 years now and in that time I've learned how to disassemble every subsystem on the car, but I still don't know the answer to that one.

And most stock wheels on Hondas are made by Enkei.

Maybe Mazda painted it yellow to get your attention, they didn't want you to forget that you have a spare tire on there and go tearing down the highway

I learned something. I thought mine was yellow because I have a CYM. I didn't know they were all yellow. I figured they were the color of the car.

maybe the wheel is painted yellow because it adds 5 extra hp...either that or it was the only paint they had lying around

This is similar to the orange spare on the NSX. It sure gets a lot of attention, and the funny color, gently persuades the owner to get the damaged tire repaired ASAP.

Prolly everything you guys said. Just proves the uniqueness of this car even more. I looked at mine the other day and swear it was silver. I didn't flip it over so I dunno about the other side, but is it yellow on both sides or just the exterior?

OK, then why is the identical Enkei spare wheel in the 2nd gen. (Turbo II, at least) silver?

The Supra spare wheel and tire, while being enormous and heavy (like a front tire on a tractor, pretty much) is also yellow. The mystery deepens...

I agree with the "humiliation factor" of having a yellow wheel on the car, and the resulting motivation to replace it with a standard wheel with a good tire as soon as possible, but that's as bad as having a loaner car with dealership advertisement plastered all over it, or having to lug an orange bag of golf clubs with the word "RENTAL" stenciled on the side...

maybe the out-of-the-ordinary colors on spares, common amongst almost all sports cars id for OTHER drivers. i always believed it to be a "marier" for other drivers since one is normally not supposed to drive over a given speed. it would most likely represent a 'hey this guy is on a spare cause it stands out from the other wheels kinda thing.'....you know, a warning of sorts.

BUT...then i would be assuming that all the other drivers on the road would even notice.......NOT...

All of you must be putting the wheel on the wrong way.. I think the silver should be out and the yellow goes to the inside..lol

Some questions were answered tonight. I thought that the previous owner must have broken the spare and replaced it with something goofy. Since he also had a yellow Integra Type-R, I figured there may be some connection.

I guess not.
