Spare tire well

Anybody know how much room is between the spare tire well and the top of the gas tank? I'm considering a mod to either move my battery there or install a subwoofer. Either way, I want to cut out the bottom of the spare tire well and make it flat.

Gas tank is pretty much right up against it. There is even some rubber padding on the gas tank to prevent it from rubbing on the chassis. I've had to fix numerous gas tanks where someone driller there and went right through the tank.

Okay, thanks. Guess I'll be dropping the tank if I decide to go that way.

My sub pics:

Its a JL Audio sub in a stock box. I screwed a couple of brackets to the bottom of the sub, and put two wall anchors in the outside holes for the carpet. Two screws hold the brackets down, and it stays in place perfectly, even during hard driving. It comes out in less than one minute by removing the two screws, and lifting it out. I have been really happy with it.

Why not just keep the spare tire well the same and make a molded box? Then your not ruining the value of your car for a stupid sub woofer.

I like the above setup, simple and can be removed if need be. I would have just used a box with matching carpet for a cleaner look.

Actually I was thinking more of putting the battery back there. I relocated it to the storage bin, but it sucks having to take half the interior out if you need to access the battery. As for the "stupid subwoofer"...a accurate music is as important to some as horsepower is to others. Besides, I'm not worried about "the value of my car" because I have no intention of getting rid of it. Made that mistake once...never again.

Regardless of how funny that sounds, it's actually good to know

So, back to the original question...in the center of the tire well there is a "hump" with a threaded hole for securing the spare. Is there anything under this "hump"? I can't see the tank mirroring this...all that trouble just for an extra half gallon of gas? But there could be inning or electrical stuff there. Really trying not to have to drop the tank.

What will you do if you get a flat tire?

That "bump" is spot welded to the floor. You can drill out the spot welds and remove it and the floor will be flat. Just be sure to use the proper drill bit and dont drill all the way though or you will be welding up holes.

Also get a small Braille battery and you wont have to take out your entire interior to change the battery. Also a battery tender will help prolong the life of the battery.

A full size battery fits under the rear strut bar. I used my storage bins for two subs
