Dear Sal Collazianno,
No dis to you, but, if you havent searched hi and low for this info you dont love the FD. If you dont love it, then you will not educate yourdself about it, therefore you won't have a beautiful experience like we ALL have.
People on this forum bitch and complain, but if they dont LOVE it like their wife they sell it to someone who does. Yeah some folks sell their soul and put v8's in em' but, deep down inside they wish they hadn't.
Do the work and make us(yourself) proud or move the **** on.

v8 rx7s are sweeeeet. the ls1 fits beautifully...looks tough....sounds tough.....but unless you are jim here and you can afford all the lightest strongest parts then you WILL notice a difference in handling (driven one and the weight is noticable). The immediate low end response is nice as well....though the one i drove could have used a little more umpf past 6k rpm's...which the giant turbo he is installing will help.
most the rotards who bitch about the ls1 in the rx havent driven one, raced one, or even seen one for that matter. pictures on the net dont count.
cant say im a fan of the shorter gears in the six speed....there is something about the long winding out of the rotary/5spd that makes my heart flutter.

This very same subject comes up on bimmerforums.com every month or so., with much of the same types of responses. My take is "It's just an effing car. If you can improve it with an American motor, more power to you."

I get a good laugh every time this comes up , some people are so hell bent on how sacred this car is. It IS just a car and it IS my car and I can do whatever I please with it even if that includes making it faster , more dependable, more reliable, lighter , increasing HP and TORQUE . When I pass you on the Highway after you blow another rotor or seal I will be sure to wave.

And I get a good laugh every time this comes up. Some people are so hell bent on how the V8 is the ultimate engine and that anyone who has not done the swap is a total fool. Reliability? I'll wager that my near-stock '94 has had more uptime than your V8, mainly because I have focused on doing the maintenance rather than massive upgrades. As for power and torque - I've had the car up to 140 on the track (VIR) and the main thing that would improve my lap times would a) improve the driver, and b) better tires and brake pads. Mainly (a). I've been in the passanger seat of an instructors near-stock FD and watched him eat up most everything else on the track. You want better perfomance? You money is better spent improving the driver first.
You have your opinions and your likes and I have mine. If you feel the need to drop a V8 into the FD chassis, that's your choice and more power to you. But don't try to pass it off as the "best" solution, especially to a newbie.
Just one question - seriously - why didn't you just go buy a Vette to begin with?

Personally I've never liked domestic cars. I think they suck and the interior looks cheap but they've always been able to build a good V8.

The FD is an excellent platform to build on, because it has light weight and a great suspension, not to mention good looks. Why start with a car that weighs an extra 300+ lbs. just to have a chassis that originally came with a V8? FDs are cheap. Even a C4 Corvette is more expensive in many instances, and a C5 is far more expensive. Who wants an even heavier Camaro/Firebird/Mustang if you can just throw the same engine in a much lighter car? In most cases, they'd still have to sell their FD at a loss or fix it before selling it, so why not start with what they've already got in hand, especially now that V8 swap parts are readily available?
V8 swaps make perfect sense. The people claiming that the FD has a soul that's being violated by removing the rotary engine are the ones that don't make any sense at all.
