Soleniod question

While trying to track down why my turbo control actuator is sticking, I’ve run into a few road blocks in the process of elimination as to find the culprit.

My question involves solenoid interchangeability. I’ve searched and seen some opposing info. I would like to try to use one of the unused solenoids if possible. I have the sequential simplification done, so I have a few spare.

Lets take for example, the pressure regulator control solenoid (PN : 13-240 No.2) and the Switching solenoid valve (PN : 18-740A No. 1) as shown here labeled A and C. They both look the same. Even with the different part numbers would these two be interchangeable. If so, why do they have a different part number? Is one in default position on or is the other on default position off

Now I can understand how something like the Turbo control solenoid (PN : 18-740A No. 2) and the Switching solenoid valve (PN : 18-740A No. 1) could be interchangeable, the only real difference is the venting filter cap thingy is on a diff side. Easily switched.

Also why I bring this up is because I think I might have the first example mixed up. That controls the fuel regulator. Oh and why the HELL is there a solenoid in there to begin with? I thought it was either on or off, what advantage is there to have a solenoid going to the fuel regulator?

Also I’m trying to see if maybe that I connected the wrong one to the Turbo control solenoid and that is what is locking up my turbo control actuator after the transition.

Argh…My brain hurts….

All you have to due is check the resistance of the unit, and more important insure that the valve functionality is the same.

Yo,

Have you checked out pages F-190 and F-191 of the FSM (Factory Service Manual)? Judging by the test procedures, I'd say all the solenoids are interchangable provided that they have the appropriate nipples.

However, replacing the solenoid may not be your option. Check this thread out:

some of them are reversed, ie some pass air when powered and some dont. generally they are electrically compatible
