So I lit My Car on FIRE!!

Today got the electrical issue I've been chasing fixed, the interior clean, and the boost adjusted so its at 18 psi solid so I decided to go for a drive to get ice cream with the girlfriend who helped get it together. We went up into the mountains to a remote town (Cripple Creek). She was watching the PFC Commander and was saying the temps read normal but I could smell somehthing cooking. Then the oil press and h2o gauge go dead and the warning lights come on. I looked in the mirror and saw smoke. I pulled off the road and popped the hood, FIRE! I didnt have an extinguisher, but fortunately she had packed a jug of water which was able to tame the flames. At first it just splashed the burning fuel, but just as I ran out of water the flames petered out. WHEW! She says I was pale and looked faint afterwards. I just got a ride back into the springs and will be picking up the car tomorrow. I'm pretty sure it was the FPD which will be replaced by AN fittings, an Aeromotive FPR and socketless hose. Of all the things you expect to find when you open the hood FIRE is not on the list. Hope this never happens to you!

Damn, glad you got it put out. I've got a bad feeling you're going to find more damage than you expect when you start to investigate the engine bay further

I'm expecting to replace the engine harness and fuel lines, possibly the injectors and a coulple of the sensors. It was pretty well confined to right under the UIM and I'm running a single so there's not much there. I feel very lucky that it went out, let alone we are both OK.

Im with these guys. Do a search for H3R we had a GB awhile back and although the GB pricing probably wont apply anymore they still sell the best extinguisher substance for car fires at a very good price.

I heard you are ricer if you buy an extinguisher to prevent fires under the hood.

But if you buy an extinguisher to prevent another fire, you are a badass.

The Rotary Gods were looking down on you, you lucky, lucky man.

I have 2 things to suggest:
1. Fire extinguisher (as stated)
2. Take your girl out to the best meal shes ever had.

Preferably in that order

I plan on buying one myself. I pulled off a local highway after doing what I now consider rediculous speed with a few friends (WRX and turboed EP3 Civic). I pulled the car into a gass station right after to fill up and as soon as I pull out of the station they say they saw flames dripping down from under the car. It didnt help that I blew it sideways leaving the station.

There was one stop light that was turning red and I decided to go thru, they got cought at it so I pulled over to wait for them and I noticed soo much smoke. My heart almost literally fell out of my butt. I immediatly shut it off and popped the hood which only caused a draft to pick up the flames.

One of the primaries had cracked and started to leak fuel that collected between the block and LIM in a little pool. When I blew the tail end out comming from the gass station the fuel pulled to one side and right out of its pool and down on to my down pipe which was hot enough to ignight it and trail its way up to my rats nest.

When they pulled behind me no one had a fire extinguisher so we sent them back to the station, however a passer by actually had one with him and stopped to help.

My fire stayed confined as well but I still lost the entire rats nest and other two solenoids, both sets of injectors and connections on everything under there. That was about a year ago. Now its down for a single conversion and in light of the fuel upgrades one of the purchases on the list is an extinquisher before we even start it.

this should be the first thing someone buys when they start to modify their car. A fire extinguisher will save you years of heartache.

Chris, glad to hear you and your two girls are ok. It blows me away the revolving probs us mile high guys have all the time and now Mikes tranny. Thanx for the wake up call. I also have not bought an extinguisher yet? I just had a bunch of emissions issues, switched back and forth from high flow cat to stocker and I have some smoke coming from the LIM turbo/y-pipe area. Its definately more of an exhaust smell, but it proceeds after I shout her down. ?? I hope there is a blown gasket of something. I see no leaks of any kind and I replaced every hose myself. I am definately not driving it til it is found, but thanx for the reminder. What was that link to the GB ext? I will be ordering one for sure.

It sounds like you averted a major disaster. It also sounds like you have a pretty cool girlfriend. Nice. Good luck getting the FD back together.

Glad to hear your car didnt get too burned. I have had an engine fire, theyre no fun. Mine was under the UIM too, one of my primaries was leaking onto the block and it pooled, then finally ignited. Suprisingly nothing got hurt, but It was idleing in my driveway when it happened. I got it put out in probably less than 45seconds...

Hopefully you get the same luck I did.

Update: just got the UIM off, looks like I'll be able to splice in some wires from the used harness I just bought, put in the top feed pri and sec system I purchased and be back on the road shortly. Only some plastic connectors and injector wiring got toasted. silicone didnt even melt!
