or I could just add it to mine... either way

BTW that is for the stock CAT

k2rd should have an individual bop for it, if not just get one from Jason...

Alright this sucks. Got everything back together went for a test drive, drove to the end of the road slow going through the gears. Then on the way back i opened it up a liltle and the wedge coller came off the throw out bearing. so i got it home in first gear, hooked it back up and when i was bleading the clutch line it pulled entirly out of the pressure plate. so now i gotta tear it all apart and try it fix it, probly have to order a replacement wedge coller and snap ring.

Also have a hesitation at 3000 RPM and rough idle if i dont have either the fan or AC running, what could be causing this?

BRADYMAHONEY 04-30-04 04:39 PM

Make sure you don't have a vacuum leak somewhere. And check all your ground connections.

GSXR0383 04-30-04 05:28 PM

I looked at it last night after i left that post, the upper cat has a hole in the weld, Also the wireing for the SAFC is pretty bad, whoever installed it didnt use the right connections, Used the Blue T-taps on wire that are way too thin for it so im gessing i got a few bad/loose connections.

I also need a new wedge collar and wire ring for an ACT xtream pressure plate, the place i purchased it from told me it was the same as the factory one. I dont have anything to compare it too, the guy i talked to didnt sound 100% sure so can any one varify that?

I must have damaged the one on there now when i put the transmission on, thats all i can think of.

ejmack1 04-30-04 09:35 PM

Yeah that wedge color can be a bitch

GSXR0383 05-10-04 11:38 PM

Got everything done(except the 1-2 switch) Runs and drives great. Well worth the time and money. Not really that hard to do.

mrch 05-17-04 01:04 AM

Can the wire harnesses from a 93 auto be put into a 93 manual. I had a front end collision and some of the connectors are destroyed. Since I had already had problems with other things not working, I considered switching out all the harness around the car. But are they compatible

ejmack1 05-17-04 01:20 AM

no not at all, mainly under the daash... i mean you could do it, but it is really worth the money your saving?

mrch 05-17-04 11:35 AM

Just looked at the harness around the engine bay-your right, it goes from under the dash driver's side through the fire wall, all the way around the front of the car to the passenge side fire wall and back under the dash. Am I asking for trouble to remove the connectors I need from the auto harness and replace the broken ones on the manual harness---or should I simply just buy a complete harness from a manual RX7..

Wow, there are a lot of entries on this topic. I'm thinking about doing the swap, and I would want to do it myself but I'm not sure if I can. I have a Taurus SHO right now; I bought it totalled and replaced almost every module, plus intake manifold gaskets. Do you think I would be able to do it? Also, as there is a surplus of entries on this, would someone please send me a link or an email with pictures for swapping them? Thanks. Email to n2soccer21@hotmail.com

Is it possible to run a T2 transmission in the FD. I have an auto and I am aquiring parts to do the 5 speed swap. I have a T2 Tranny thats why I am asking. Or do I have to use the FD 5 speed Tranny?

Thanks for the help!

ejmack1 11-28-05 08:53 PM

Im almost 100% positive you need the FD tranny...

shit i think i am 100% positive...

Anyway search my past posts on this subject, and Cover8. Man Its been years since I have done this conversion... And its still running fine, granted everything about the car is changed now. Without looking at the VIN, you can't tell it was an auto, all harnesses and everything else associated was changed.

If you still have questions after reading all my past threads PM me.

JaNusSolSumnus 11-28-05 10:09 PM

Unless you have a T2 rear plate, T2 starter, T2 mounts (which require welding onto the body), removal of the PPF and suitable replacement bracings... short answer, no... long answer, no.

does any 1 have any spare connectors from the auto shifter? I'm looking for the "selector illumination light", H1-07 connector. Refer to wiring diagram I-2. THat would help me out immensley!

Ohnigiri 11-29-05 12:12 AM

I did the swap on a 1992 FD.....again. Sort of.....The origional swap was just the tranny....the second swap was engine and tranny. Not fun. The manual engine harness does not fit the auto front or dash harness. I ended up swapping out a 1992 man dash harnes. I still had to rewire the X-15 (i think that was the one...big and blue) connecter. There are no wiring diagrams for the 1992 JDM that I can read, so I had to hard wire the starter to a button. (Now I have a push button start....I hate it.) I am still having trouble getting the nuetral and clutch switches to work. (PFC showes allways off) Looking back I would rather have spent $999,999,999,999.99 to have someone else do it all. Oh...I still need a tune.

I'm buying an Evo

Do I need the " Power Plant Frame "(PPF) from a Manual to do this conversion?

officially, no, but my auto ppf did not fit and i had to source a manual one.

RotorFrank 03-15-06 07:32 PM

Reviving this thread, im going the swap soon. I just bought this tranny off a nice guy on the board in austin,tx. And its missing a sensor or a switch Im not quite sure which one it is.. can anyone tell me exactly?

Neutral Switch

RotorFrank 03-22-06 02:53 PM

You think so? I was thinking backup light switch.

Ball joint 03-31-06 12:14 PM

dont mean to re bring this back from the dead but iam in the process of the swap and I think ive gotten it all figured out except for the cruise control part. It says to cut the blue/white wire @ pin G on the Cruise control ECU connector for the cruse control to work but I have no idea where this connector is. Can anyone tell me which one it is?

speedsilver7 04-01-06 12:30 AM

i just finished my 5 speed swap,it was fun
thanks you all

RotorFrank 04-03-06 11:04 PM

I'm also gathering the last few parts to do it myself as well. Something I wanted to know, I remember someone describing the new parts that they bought from the dealer, including gaskets and stuff like that you need to replace. Where can I find that again? I remember there was a post about it.

Dont worry about reviving this post btw, cuz this is something important. Since all the past links are dead now, this is all we have left.

I will let you guys know of my progress.

wow thread broght back from the dead.... im going on over 3 years with my conversion :)

EDIT: Make that 5 years... damn time flies

blackfcTII 06-08-06 05:27 PM

I converted mine to a standard two years ago. Was it worth it. Hell yeah. What did I spend, 200 for a wrecked RX7, and 60 to have a custom trans cross member made to bolt up to the body. $260, thats it. Reused every part the wrecked car had, clutch and every thing. Has run strong ever since and a whole lot faster. Now I'm converting to a Turbo II. The engine and tranny will be here tomorrow. Comes with the wiring harness and every thing. But there is one problem. Will a N/A manual driveshaft work with the turbo II tranny? My car is a S5. The manual tranny and drive shaft I put in it came off a S4. The JDM Turbo II Engine and Tranny is for a S5. So...... does it matter? Will my S4 N/A manual driveshaft work? Thought I was in the clear, now I'm not sure.

blackfcTII 06-20-06 08:40 PM

Ha, you guys are doing the swap on the FD3S arent you. I just realized that. Whoops, I'm in the wrong spot. My bad. :fawk:

Ball joint 06-21-06 12:28 PM

one tip dont buy JDM RHD pedals. no matter what any dumb forum member tells you they dont fit.

katit 07-06-06 09:44 AM

What about different engine numbers for manual and automatic?
Does it matter?

Not true, I have JDM RHD pedals in my LHD right now. The brake brackets are different but you can swap the bracket off your auto brake and put the JDM manual brake in. Then you have to trim off some of the pedal stop to get it to clear the stearing wheel column. No big deal with a die grinder, just grind, test fit, grind, test fit until it fits without rubbing during pedal stroke. Clutch fits without any modification what so ever.

One word of warning, if you have big feet do not do this setup, with the JDM pedals installed the brake is closer to the gas than in a USDM and if you wear big shoes like me it makes it a pain. My combat boots just don't fit. On the other hand it makes it easy as hell to heal toe as you can easily reach both pedals with the bottom of your foot without having to twist your foot and get in a funny posistion.

jacobcartmill 09-17-06 06:35 PM

sorry to revive this thread again, but if i were to do a 5speed swap and use a 5speed ECU, is there any rewiring that needs to be done? it seems that most of the rewiring i've read about with this swap is done because of the auto ecu not having the auto tranny anymore. anybody have any input on this?

jacobcartmill 09-17-06 06:55 PM

also, does anyone have an in-depth price list of a typical 5speed swap with new hydraulics?

'85GSL-SE 09-17-06 11:51 PM

My friend KEEP the Automatic ECU. It has a more aggressive Timing on it. It works like a charm with no problems and no rewiring anything ecept for the starter interlock and reverse lights.

Your setup will vary on price, My full deal costed me around $1,700. Myself and LT1Rx7 did the work on it in one day. about 10 hours to do the complete swap on jack stands with basic hand tools and a BIG BREAKER bar.

Ball joint 09-18-06 02:24 PM

Just dont buy JDM pedals. No matter how much some ass hole forum member tells you they work they dont :)

If you were going to install a Power FC after doing the swap, which would you install a Manual PFC or an Automatic PFC?

1234rotor 11-16-06 08:21 PM

Might as well run the manual PFC. I did not know they made an auto-specific PFC.

Put me down for TWO auto to manual swaps. Completed by yours truly.

hey guys,

ive been looking all over the web for the most informative info on the auto/manual swap. and this is the place that has it all... I just noticed that this post has been around since 2001 @_@; and I bet yall retired FD runners :P

I see every1 has diff experiences, many got lucky while others had hell. Well... I know theres no magical manual on how to do this but here is my cry for help:

Just got a automatic 93 rx7, engine is in pieces. what would be the best option for me... rebuild the engine/make it manual, or buy manual engine w/tranni, and work with that.
I'm honestly @ starting point, so any recommendations how should I take this project I would appreciate it.

Here are the parts...

This thread combined with the following:

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-gen-archives-73/mt-swap-161482/

has about all the information you need to complete the swap.

pinkrx7 06-16-07 11:36 AM

what would this section do without you?!

flubyux2 11-09-07 03:10 PM

anyone know if the spline count is the SAME between the AT and the MT driveshafts?

i dont have both infront of me right now, i only have the 5sp driveshaft and i didnt test to see if the AT driveshaft would slide into the manual tranny before i traded it. id love to hear a simple "Yes, the Auto driveshaft will slide into the 5sp tranny"!

EDIT: apparently not :( sonofabitch...

mystikalbob 02-09-09 01:26 PM

reviving. :)

so i read this whole thread. and currently buying parts to do the swap. what i gathered from this is that you need the following:

clutch & brake pedals
driveline
transmission
clutch kit and clutch line
clutch master and slave cylinder
ecu (heard you can use auto ecu too)
rear-end
starter

if i can use the auto ECU then this swap will be a lot easier. cause if i use a 5spd ECU, then i'd have to switch my engine harness also; correct?? which i don't want to do. :)

any/more help is appreciated.

jhcrazyboi 02-09-09 10:54 PM

You can use your auto ecu for the 5 speed swap, but if you want to use the 5 speed ecu you going to have to change the engine harness or spend hour and hour cutting and soldering wire. i just went the easier route and just change out most of the auto harness to 5 speed harness beside the under dash harness. Seem to be working out pretty good.
