Smoke when lifting off after 5500 rpm

Just got a 92 RX7 RZ in from japan today and when I was driving it home from the docks I noticed that when I lift off after about 5500 rpm blue smoke comes out the exhaust. Does this mean one of the turbo's is gone or are the engine seals are gone .

I have the same thing.. turbo seals are bad.
It also smokes slightly at idle - but I have no main cat.
When the oil pressure raises, it forces oil through the seals and into the turbine

It's also the vacuum that forms in the intake when you let off the throttle, which actually pulls that oil leaking from the seals into the intake tract.

Take the pipes off your intercooler and you'll see oil in them if what said above is happening

Your apex seals are pretty worn. The car will probably still run good. The smoke will gradually get worse until you can't stand it any more

How do you know the apex seals are gone? the car starts perfectly and you can rev it all you want upto 3000 rpm with no smaoke at all. I think that i will just get the turbos rebuilt as i have spoken to a few people about this and they all think it's just turbo seals. thanks for your help anyway.

find someone with a compression tester and find out what you got on each rotor. I've read people gettin 85 all across and still running(thats too low and close to dying though). I'm assuming closer to 100 for a worn engine or a brand new one(mine had 100 when rebilt w/street ports).
How many miles on the motor/turbos? Its most likely turbos. thats how it starts, a little smoke when you lift. Then it turns into more and more smoke until you acutally start gushing oil right out of the tailpipe! i've seen it and i've gotten a windshield full of oil from driving behind an FD w/blown twins(embarrasing 007 smokescreen - lol)

there's 60000kms on the engine. It starts within 1 or 2 seconds everytime and will idle smoothly. I'm hoping that it is only the turbos as i dont want to have to rebuild the engine allready.
Do you think i should replace both turbos or is it likely to be only one giving trouble?
