smoke from the turbo area.heelllp.
Ok so I was changing out some gaskets and also the throttle body o ring which was venting boost.Anyways I just finished up and I started the car.So I start to see exaust coming up from what looks like the y pipe but how could that be the y pipe is on the intake side of things. So im thinking its the turbos that are either smoking or there may be a restriction in the exaust system. Will a clogged main cat or precat cause the exhaust to come out of the turbos or what? Or does this sound like more of a cracked turbo manifold, cracked turbo housings or perhaps the lower intake manifold?
I hope someone can really help me out here.Im really freaking out right now.

there must be someone that has some knowledge on this.My main question is this. Will the exhaust come back up the turbines and vent if there is a restriction in the precat or main cat? Also if the exhaust is leaking from somewhere does it signify that the lower intake manifold gasket is leaking. If someone can help mme figure out whether the lower intake manifold gasket is even in the equation or if I can rule that out id really appreciatte it.

When my turbo area smoked, it was due to a bloated coolant hose underneath the airpump dripping onto the dp. Since you only messed with the tb, I'm guessing it might be a long trail of coolant from the tb area.....
If I were you, I would take off as much simple stuff as I could, and check for leaks top-to-bottom (& not bottom-to-top). Pressure testing helps too
g'luck

Thank you jonski. The help is much appreciated.Ill check the coupler out and see if thats what the problem is.Although my probnlem isnt as small as that one guys. The smoke keeps on pumping out from the turbo y pipe area in intervals.I didnt know that the y pipe even came in contact with exhaust.Or does it?

No.

I've never heard of it happening, but if your EGR gasket was leaking, then exhaust would be getting into your engine bay. I honestly doubt this is the problem. Check the coolant line first. It's somewhat common for this to rupture or crack.

ok i looked under the air pump and checked every hose in that area. Now if a hose was leaking wouldnt it leak all the time? Im thinking yeah. But I just started the car again and lo and behold. No smoke at all.So im like what the hell.It most likely is the damn y pipe.Plastic piece of ****.I cant wait to replace it with the effini polished one.

thanx for the info kento. So how exactly does a car with a clogged cat or precat react? barely boosts? My car boosts fine right now.getting .7 bar and sometimes .8
So you must be right about the cat not being clogged.
Im definatly going to replace both the main cat and precat asap anyways though.

Make sure the next time it smokes that you determine what it smells like (oil, coolant, etc.).
And no, don't sit there whiffing it up like .... (before the jokers among us get started... )

If you find out let me know. I have the same problem even after tighting down my downpipe. Could my cat be clogged and the back pressure knocking open? I doubt it cause I get very good boost.

I haven't taken my turbos our before, I just did a hose job and didin't find nay coolant leaks on the down pipe or turbo. I know for a fact its oil burning off from the outside of the turbos. Under my car there is a splatter of oil thats gotten pretty big over time. I'm still pushing 8 lbs of boost. Maybe the threading on the turbo oil lines is leaking?

Most likely your oil return lines are leaking. To check for that, jack the car up and remove belly pan. You will see two hard pipe lines coming off the bottom of both turbos and bend towards the engine. It also could be a oil pan leak that runs down on the subframe.
