sleek headlight conversion
sleek headlight conversion
Hi:
We had one of the headlight pop up covers flyoff the car and its gone now, rip.
We had been thinking about replacing the pop-ups with a conversion kit like the amemiya sleek headlights, but those a bit pricey.
I have looked through the forum and most posts on headlight conversions are fairly old, many websites referenced are not even working anymore.
Looking for suggestion for a another kit that fits well and costs less.

Stock FD lights are pretty poor, most of the aftermarket ones are far worse if you have any need to drive at night.
If you happen to regret the choice later, reinstallation is a pain trying to reinstate cut out sheet metal, at least for the Re-A ones.

?????????? I think so, unless there's another version.
If you were just going for looks over function, the C-west varieties always appealed more to me. Finding an old set in Japan and hoping the perspex wasn't yellowed, would be quite the task these days though.

You can get new headlight covers from Mazda for about $80, they are premiered and just need a spray of your paint and you're good to go. Recommend replacing both since they are both of the same age.
The non-pop up kits out there have HORRIBLE lighting and typically require you to hack up the car to install them. Also, you're taking away one of the cool features of the car IMHO.
You can get something like the Sakebomb HID kit for the stock pop ups and have AMAZING headlights. Like as good if not better than most modern cars.

There are some sleek light kits like the RE Amemiya ones and copies (Rotary Extreme, etc) you have to cut the unibody of the car to put in.
Don't do that no matter what unless your car is already a salvage title.
C-West (or C-West "style") would be a good reversible option.

I reached out to Sake Bomb a few months ago and they confirmed that the headlights are discontinued but strong agree with Dale that popups are cool and you should consider just getting a new headlight lid.
RX-Lights is another option if you decide to keep the popups but want something brighter than OEM... I actually have a set out for delivery today.

Thanks all for the replies, we have an aftermarket headlamp like sake-bombs.
We will get a new cover and keep them.
Local Mazda here in Reno wanted $170.
I found some on ebay for $120, they said they were OEM, hope they were not lying.

If they look and fit like OEM and come in a bag with a Mazda part number you are good. There are knock offs I've seen but they are SUPER obvious in your hands, bottom doesn't look like OEM at all. And they fit like crap.

Get them from Ray Crowe, he always gets us the best prices on authentic OEM Mazda parts.
You can also go to the local parts store and get a set of Sylvania Silverstar halogen bulbs. Last I checked maybe $50 for the pair. Significant improvement over what you’ve probably got. Completely p n p.
^Also with ANY headlight setup, factory or aftermarket, take some time and AIM THEM. There are a number of Youtube videos with how-to's, it's not hard, and properly aimed headlights are a WORLD of difference. And, yes, if your car is bone stock your headlights are probably aimed wrong! That and some good bulbs will help the factory setup - it's still not the world's best headlights, but it's much better, and cheaper too.

It would seem the hot water lab version 2 lights are available again. These are the LED version and are supposed to be pretty good.
