Question should i buy my friend's 93FD?

apparently, after that one day the forums were down, my username along with my post, got deleted. so i had to re-register.

back to my original question.

my friend is getting rid of her 93 VR FD, not sure if it's R1 or Touring. it has 70k on the chassis. the only mods on it are wing, HKS exhaust and a turbo timer. other than that, the car is pretty much clean and stock.

the thing is, the engine needs work. it tends to overheat and after that, i think it shuts off. i'm not sure about exact details, but i'm assuming the engine needs some serious work.

as for mods, i'm planning on keeping the car mostly stock, except for maybe intercooler, downpipe, suspension, and some alluminum pipes in place of the rubber hoses.

ok, asking price is somewhere between $7000-$8000. assuming the engine needs to be restored or replaced completely, is this a good deal?

i've listed some of my pros and cons...

pros:
my dream car since high school
VERY FAST
sleek design
body, frame, cosmetics is near perfect
will/should keep up with supra and M3
5sp
beautiful car
gets attention on the road

cons:
engine needs work
known to have problems
2seater (that means only room for 1 girl =P )
no back seats
no trunk space
no room for golf clubs
no winter driving

thanks in advance-

p.s.- i am EXTREME newbie.

if this is a car that you really want and have an extra couple of grand to put into it i would def buy it. as long as the interior is clean and so is the outside of the car. no dings, paint is clean, etc. if you buy it for 7k and have to put a new engine in it (i beleive they cost around 3500) your still only looking at 10-11k for the car. which would be really good. just search this forum for any questions you have, you'll learn alot. good luck w/ everything. nick

Well the engine has to go. Overheating is not good. It's probably on it's way out.
If the body and interior is in good shape, $7000 is a pretty good price for it.
Drop $2000 for a reman, $500 for street port, $1500 for labor and you've got yourself a great car.
About $11K all together to get it running good. Not to shabby.

dont buy the car if you want to keep that friendship intact. haha....unless you realize that you have at best a "project" car. that motor is gone most likely.....2k reman is a bad idea..they tend to fail...get a good rebuild from one of the well known rebuilders like kdr rotary or rotary reliability and racing 7148398018...get the port...replace all the solonoids, sensors, broken or loose parts...get a downpipe..the ecu upgrade...

if that motor is out...do the clutch and other nearby repairs...probably have to rebuild the turbos as well...

ya see what i mean??

Above is correct. There will be a lot more money to invest than meets the eye. How about 5th gear syncro?
If you have the money and starting with a near mint car, you won't be going too far overboard with the cost, even if you put $60007000 in it. Not a true bargin, but at least you know what you have.
Money mounts up very quickly with these cars.

most likely, i would bring it to KDRotary and have it rebuilt w/ reliability mods and street ported. their price is $5101.84

i want to keep this car as a daily driver, and reliable. so that means no unneccesary boost, mods, etc.

i'm a previous honda/acura owner, and i know that parts don't come cheap for the rx7. right now i'm just looking for a rough estimate to see how much i would be spending on this car.

any thoughts?

Why not just say "sports car" and save a bunch of keystrokes?

In my opnion that is a great deal. You can have yourself a fresh RX7 for no more then 12k. Try finding a RX7 with a rebuilt motor for that price. If you dont want it pm me, i know a friend that would buy it instantly.

rx-7 reliable daily driver??? very unlikely....

not sure how old you are but if you are under 25...check your insurance cost first....i am 24 with perfect driving record and pay $240.00 a month....now about the car it is a good deal if you have the money to put in it

....if you don't want it pm me...i am interested in it...i would love to start another project car.....i live right outside philly and can pick it up anytime....

another thing it snows in jersey...don't even think about driving if they are even calling for snow....

7g's for a fd is a killer deal. if you drop another 6g's into it you'll get a car w/ a brand new motor for 13k. that price can't be beat.
