Short Shifters: what makes them so?

Are the short shifters simply shifters with shorter sticks? or do they somehow do something else to reduce the throw. I know people talk about cutting their stock ones down, does that really accomplish the same end?

That thread has lots of good info, but I still have another question I thought i'd tack on to this one rather than start a new thread.

What about the RE-Amemiya short shift that's on FDnewbie's site? Anyone had experience with this one, the price is less than the Mazdaspeed replica on rx7store, and from what i've seen the quality of RE-Amemiya stuff is generally tough to beat. :P

The RE-Amemiya is nice but it does'nt shorten the shift that much, it just smoothens the shifting

From what I recall, the RE short shifter is just a shorter stock shifter only in height (i.e. its like they cut off a few inches). IIRC, the pivot spot is still in the same position as the stock one so the throw is not that much shorter.

LOL! If you know how to weld, you can actually convert the stock one to a short shifter. Really all to have to do is extent the lower half below the round pivot point 1/2", create a spacer out of some thick plexi-glass to raise the mounting base 1/2", and shorten the handle. Just remember, how ever long you extend the lower half is how thick the spacer should be. Sure this may be time consuming but if you know how to fab, it's cheap and easy. Hell I could modify one in about 30mins.
