Sensor hole?

There is what appears to be a sensor hole under the oil filler neck on the center housing. What goes there? We think it's one of the temp. sensors but aren't sure, and the shop manual isn't helping.

Thanks in advance!

Is it near the oil pan next to the engine coolant plug? This hole serves no purpose.

it is on the top of the block *directly* under the filler neck, not down by the oil pan. there's a wire than runs right by it that we think a sensor would plug into, but we don't want to guess!
