I lost a LOT of sleep over removing my driver side airbag, because when it comes to safety, I think you need to be on the cautious and conservative side, rather than the liberal side. And when you think about the likelihood of a side impact (be it direct from being T-boned, or subsequent to another hit which spins you around and into another object), I think using a door that doesn't have a side impact bar is nothing less than foolish. It's a very large risk to take for marginal benefit. Even the professional race cars still have side impact bars as part of their roll cages...

Very well put and point taken. Thanks Ramy. I guess I'll stick with the OEM door then....

So lemme get this straight. You wanna save 5 lbs only to add to it 10 lbs? Doesn't seem much like savings to me...

You see, a side impact bar isn't something you "bolt on" to a door - let alone a CF door. It must be a part of the mold when the door is originally being made. I can't imagine a way you can add anything to a CF door to reinforce it that wouldn't take a great deal of reinforcing itself, which translates to a lot of work and weight - and very little intelligence IMO.

The only circumstance where I see it worthwhile is when reinforcing a CF wing in a CF hatch, and that's simply b/c the amount of drag the wing is causing is enough to rip it right out of the narrow mounting points in the hatch. Thus, you have to reinforce the wing by either expanding the surface area of the mounting point (making a very large and wide mounting plate etc) or (ideally) securing the wing to the floor of the trunk, easily removable via hood pins.

I beleive the beams are an intergral part of the door, welded in and you probably can't get them in and out without cutting up the door, so that's probably not an option.

All it takes is for someone to run a red light and T-bone you. My mom was in a really serious accident back in the '90's (hit by a drunk driver) and wouldn't have survived if it wasn't for the door beam.

The OEM door side impact bars are so strong that one side often comes loose from vibration. The weld breaks if I remember correctly. That's what many FD owners found when their doors started making a wimpy tinny sound when the door was shut. I don't think it would take much to make a side impact bar for carbon fiber doors and bolt it in with many small bolts. Many small bolts is stronger than a few large bolts and doesn't require as reinforced of an area to bolt to. It would still be nice to do some testing though.
