Screen type air filter

Hey guys I was just reading the latest rxtuner and came across the single turbo 3rd gen. Its got just some screen over the intake...no actualy filter. What is up with this? I've noticed a lot of guys from japan do this. Obviously it'll flow a bit better but is it really ok to do this? What about dust etc. How come so many cars over there do it and I don't even know if I've seen one car here in the states with this?

A guy near me with a single turbo 3rd gen has the same thing, it looks like it will only catch something the size of a BB or bigger.

they are not air filters, they are just screens. they are not for daily driving. just for temporary use and race cars so that you dont suck a bird into yur tubo.
