I'm planning out my build for my FD's when I get back home next year. Currently it's a pretty clean red 92 FD3S. I don't really like red, so i'm going to be ripping out the red leather front seats and will probably throw them up for sale here, or locally. and throw in some Veilside reclining front seats and spray the rear leather black since they are never used.


It's going to be getting a Veilside fortune kit and I've yet to decide on the color scheming although I have always loved this kit since I first set eyes on it. So bringing us to the point. Do you think Scissor doors on a Veilside fortune kit is too tacky/ricey? I think the kit completely changes the feeling of the car at appearance and scissor doors are quite fitting for it but i'm just curious of everyone's opinion.

I'm not a big fan of the veilside kit but since you've decided on it, I'd say the scissor doors will complement it well, so yay! Go all in or all out!

by all means if you can talk me out of it for at least 5-10 years please do haha. I definitely want it at some point in my life but I don't really see many others that I would like to roll with to satisfy my hunger for a while.

Ok, so this caught me a bit off guard... Why the hell would you spend (waste) the insane amount of money it costs to get the veilside kit, then turn around and cheap out and spray (paint, I assume) the interior leather???

You do realize that, insofar as resale value, that veilside kit is essentially going to be money wasted, right? It's a very niche kit as far as style and taste and it will really only appeal to a small percentage of the community. So unless you plan on dying in this car you're basically going to be throwing $15k (plus) in the trash.

Honestly that money would be better spent elsewhere (like put into purchasing an FD that appeals more to your aesthetic tastes... lol) Though, I suppose it would also be best for you to put a Veilside kit on the oldest FD available, instead of updating (ruining) the look of a '94+ car

In relation to the question of doors... Ricey as hell in my opinion... But then again, so is the Veilside kit, so I guess it would be fitting..

It's your car and you should do what appeases you. Who cares what others think.

I do like the Fortune kit. It transforms the car into something unique and exotic-looking. Scissor doors would suit the kit. I wouldn't say the same for the stock FD though.

I have seen in person and worked with a professionally installed and painted Veilside Fortune kit. While it is big and showy, the kit really isn't as well made as you would think. The headlights were crap, the rear hatch plexiglass leaked, the whole thing seemed creaky and unwieldy. You're adding a truckload of thin fiberglass everywhere to bulk out the car.

Scissor doors - while they are neat in theory, I have NEVER seen a kit that was what I would consider nice. All of them were junky, fit poorly, the door usually scraped and didn't fit to the frame right anymore, you had to monkey with the door to open and close it, etc. Also, all those kits require the door to open outwards a few inches then go up. The whole time the door is wobbling around and you have to force it open and closed. Then, a few months later the welds holding the door mechanism on start to break and the door always rubs the frame when you close it, scraping paint off and showing rusty metal.

The idea of a scissor door is awesome, but the ENGINEERING to make one viable as a retrofit isn't there. All these kits are cheaply fabricated and the demand has led to only cheap junk on the market not a proper engineered solution.

Exactly, you are turning your factory fit/finish FD into a kit car.

There are kit cars finished out to an excellent fit and finish...

but that will be putting in another $50,000

This is for not only top level body work, but also to fix all the "details" (basics?) that Veilside was too lazy to work out like making a reinforced hatch with real glass that won't scratch to hell, wheel well liners so your fragile fiberglass body won't crack to hell from pebbles, reinforcing the body so it doesn't crack when a size 0 model leans against it, real headlights so you can drive it at night, etc.

Maybe I am just spouting this off because I think the Veilside kit takes a beautiful curvaceous car and turns it into an awkward wannabee kit car style "exotic" car.

The FDs strong points are looks and handling- fix everything else on the car before you start ******* with those two things as a wide body kit does.

Well put Dale. Hrmmm I think I've always loved the Fortune kit, and I WILL have it but now that I hear some of the other side I may try something else first and see how much I enjoy that before I go strait all in on the Veilside. I don't have my RX-7 to hold onto and sell as a clean car in the future, or even track or anything. I simply have it because I love it, and I love to do a little spirited driving in a beautiful car. I may try something similar to this before I go in on the Veilside.

I would recommend seeing one in person first before making a decision. I'm sure you could probably see one in person at an RX-7 meet in Texas somewhere . I'm a big fan of going to RX-7 get-togethers, the amount you can learn by seeing things in person and talking to owners is astounding.

That kit really is a show car kit, while it looks cool it's fragile and not designed for regular use.

As with ALL these sort of questions/threads it is the same things: It's YOUR car so do what you want with it. You could paint rainbow unicorns on it if that is what you want to do.
Of course, most of these aftermarket kits look like total ***, especially up close. As others have noted, quality is poor to non-existent, fit/finish unremarkable to total ****. You'll ruin any value of the car to anyone with any tastes other than your own. But if that is your dream, hell...go for it. Except for the scissor doors...that is just a pipe dream that is frankly un-workable. The structure of the FD was never intended for them...it WON'T work.
