sandblasting stock wheels?

Is it ok to sand blast the stock wheels using just regular sand blasting sand? or do I need special stuff? I'm worried that the regular stuff might be to hard and pit the wheels.

I had one set of stock rims bead blasted and one set sand blasted before they were powder coated. Definitely didn't pit the wheels...made the finish nice and smooth.
