"safest" way to transfer a title..

I should probably put this in another section but know there's alot of traffic here, plus it does sorta concern an FD. I just made a long-distance purchase & am not sure if I should have the current owner certified-mail the title to me, or just let it come with the car when it's shipped next week? Not that it really makes a difference I don't guess, but this is the first long-distance vehicle purchase I've made that didn't involve a dealer. As always, thanks in advance!

Best to have him overnight the title to you, this way you have the title in hand ASAP. That's what I did when I brought my FD out of state.

Yeah have him signed it and send it to you certified mail. Make sure that his title isn't required to be notarized when he signs it. I had to have the previous owner get new title because it was required to be signed by him in front of a notary. Oh yeah this a Pa. title.

Thanks guys. Also, I wasn't aware of the notary thing in certain states - good to know!

Get it certified mailed to you so you can track it and get delivery confirmation so he can't back out and blame it on someone else when it disappears. Plus with the title you can register the car before hand and get license plates and stickers for it. So when you receive shipment you can just put the license plates on and drive.

Perhaps others will correct me and I do not mean to be rude. However I highly suggest never purchasing a vehicle without title in hand. I understand you may be ordering from a long distance but there has to be a safer way via escrow or similar to do the transaction. Good luck!

Would not be comfortable with this either. At least get a high resolution scan of the title emailed to you first.
