?safe to run no AST?.. ive searched...

is it safe to not run the factory AST.... i eliminated mine a long time ago .... now on the my new motor my mechanic thinks i should put in a new one.(no my old motor didnt overheat)...is it safe to not run it at all... i never had anytype of overheating problems or anything of that sort...

or should i just get a aluminum one??i know if mazda put it on the car it must have a purpose... what the hell is that purpose.. i cant really seem to find a straight answer.... ive even seen eliminator kits so?? what should i do ...i need to know asap so please guys help out.....
