the rotary engine is one of the least forgiving, everyone is just trying to get you to acknowledge that first and foremost before you get in up to your neck with parts everywhere. first part is to try and diagnose why the engine failed, prepare for the worst case scenario that is that your engine may not have very many or any at all salvageable parts and other issues will need to be addressed while it's out.

You can flow test injectors after you pull them. You can check a fuel filter to see if it's clogged. You can bench test a fuel pump to determine if it's operating normally. There are dozens (?) of other systems that can and should be checked - most of which can be done without opening the keg (even though it will come to that sooner or later).

Being a *good* mechanic is much less about turning wrenches and more about detective work; figuring out what caused the issue.

A rebuild is an autopsy. What you need is an investigation into the murder.

Let me ask this; regardless of you being in podunk Japan - you mentioned earlier there was a shop recommending that you install a running motor. Does this shop have trusted connections for getting a motor? Maybe something more reliable then an auction?

As for the money issue, I get it... you're in high school. Could you possibly work off whatever they charge you to do the swap and even let you help/learn? Maybe it's an issue where you can afford $X and work off $Y? I mean, even if they made you sweep floors and organize parts - who cares - at least you're pursuing your career and hopefully have someone to guide you.

most things you would be testing with the engine out, which is the point many were trying to make. to me it sounds like you have just been blaming a bad engine for it going south, to me it sounds like poorly planned mods that strained an already aged fuel system. rotaries may be made of glass, but it still takes a reason for them to shatter.

Whats the deal with sourcing a 2nd hand engine and chucking that in - as far as the powers that be are concerned?
Surely they are available for cheap over there?

From what it seems like, he'd rather pay the same amount for a 0k engine as opposed to an unknown running one. Soon it'll be proven (again) that while interesting, building a motor is a bit more complicated than just watching the DVD and turning a wrench. Someone in Japan is going to get a good deal on a car with no motor in the next 6 months

they gotta be a lot cheaper there than over here, otherwise there would be no profit in shipping them here and wasting their own time selling them for how much they paid.

I don't think I've seen this posted...... how many miles/km's are on the chassis and engine? what turbo system? You'll probably be looking at new or rebuilt turbo(s) as well.

I think he said the car has around 40k miles on it. You are exactly right about the turbos though. FOD.

I think this thread is great, so many people have been in this kids situation and taken the wrong routes.... only to end up selling the car or putting a v8 into it.

Too bad he edited that last post to take mine completely out of context.

Now I just sound like a crazy person.

Thread won't be closed, no reason to. You need a thick skin to post on the internet..... use the forum wisely and you'll get lots of help for no cost at all. Can't beat that

Fantastic. This thread should be retitled 'What to do when your engine goes' and archived.

Y'all did help some. I am trying to see if I can get another motor from a more reliable source than auction since I found a place to store an extra motor...if I can find one.

mostly it was constructive criticism, which sometimes drives people to do what those say you cannot do to do.
