Rusted throwout bearing
Rusted throwout bearing
I'm looking for opinions of whether or not the rust on my throwout bearing needs to be taken off or if it even matters. I've added a picture below.

If it's that rusty, it's quite possible the bearing itself is questionable. Unless it's brand new and just has some surface rust from sitting in the weather.
If it's an old bearing, replace it with new, it's not worth taking the chance. If it's a new bearing, some work with a Scotchbrite pad and some WD-40 will take that surface rust off and make it shiny and new. I would also spin the bearing and make sure it spins freely, quickly, and smoothly, like a skateboard wheel. If it's noisy or has dead spots, replace it.

The bearing is barely used and still feels perfect. It's rusted from sitting while getting the engine rebuilt and not being driven for almost 2 years. Either way I might just buy a new one. Thanks for your input.

It always sucks to start a new engine, or complete a trans job, and hear that bearing making noise until you press in the clutch. When in doubt, replace with new IMO

The last thing that you want to do is tear it all apart again.
Even though I am an FC guy,I opt for new...well except once.
Wouldn't you know it that ONCE was the time that the "barely used" Throw out bearing would Give out.I was pissed.Even brought it back to the Supplier..(He's a ****..).
So I had to drop the trans again..not a happy camper that day.
Anyhow,Moral of the Story: save the Labor, replace the part if you question it at all.
