running rich, smoke at start up

sup guys, just wanted to ask if any of u guys knew about why my car might be running rich...I have a 93 touring, with 87k on it, and it just smells like its runnin rich from the exhaust. Also, the exhaust excessively smokes white when I first start it and drive for the first 5-7 mins or so. I know these cars are supposed to burn oil, but that much? or is it coolant? if u could help me possibly diagnose this that would be greatly appreciated.

Normally, you should get a little smoke at start up (depending on how long the car has sat without being driven). However, it shouldn't last long.

First thing, check the smell of the smoke. See if you have a hint of coolant smell in the smoke or not.

If there is no coolant smell, then check the oil lines for the turbos and then have the turbos themselves checked out.

Good luck.

thanks for the input...Im not really sure exactly what coolant is supposed to "smell" like though...at least when it burns.

you will be able to tell the difference between coolant, oil or gas

thx snook. I know the car smells like gas when it first starts up as I was saying earlier...it basically smells like unburned gas. But later as I drive, theres white smoke. And quite a bit of it... I can see it from commin off the back of the car from my rear view mirror. I guess I should go out and take a sniff when that happens. But after a few minutes of driving, it all dissappears, and is just hot by the exhaust.

White smoke isn't good. Just from experience, my bet is on the latter...

Fuel is black/clear looking when it comes from the exhaust

The white smoke is either oil or coolant. Both are not great indications. From your description it could be either or both. You really need to give us more info about life of the motor and turbos and your mods. Do you have a trusted rotary shop near where you live? I would take it there and get a free inspection...it should be really obvious for them since they are right there with the car.

I hope this is something very small
good luck

My car is also stock with 52.000 miles, my compression is good and the color of the smoke is hard to tell but it also smells like unburned gas.
Could it be the turbos how could I tell if they are bad?
The only way to tell will be with a boost gauge?

Thank you in advance,

Alex Kuipers
