Replacing the streering rack.

My current rack is shot, the boots tore off and I guess it dirt and grit in there and ruined the seals, and now its leaking power steering fluid like crazy, so I’m looking at getting a rebuilt rack. A local place in town has them for $250 for the FD so that’s not bad.

The bad part is actually replacing the rack. I've heard it is a royal PITA to get out of the car. Does anyone have any instructions or helpful hints on how to remove it? I haven't even taken a close look at it so any info is helpful.

Thanks,
zinx

IIRC there is not room to slide the rack out the side of the car without dropping the subframe first. That isn't too big a deal. You'd have to block the engine and transmission up and then remove the two engine mount nuts and the four bolts holding the subframe. The suspension could just droop with the subframe; no need to bother with it.

Ideally mark the exact position of the subframe before dropping it. If you don't get it back in the exact same spot your front end alignment will be wonky.

That doesn't seem to bad, especially since I have my pair of Polyurethane engine mounts waiting to go in, sounds like I can knock out two birds with one stone.
