Hey guys -

Starting work this weekend on a buddy's FD. We will likely be swapping in carpet from a parts car.

The parts car carpet -

- lost most of the soft jute padding under the seats, stayed stuck on the old car
- has some of the yellow foam padding underneath damaged by I guess an overheated cat at some point

So it looks like I may need to replace/repair some of that so the carpet is nice and quality.

Anyone done this? Good sources for carpet padding?

ACC sells the backing in sheets you can cut and are pretty good products.

If you can reuse the yellow foam the better, else Automotive Jute Carpet Padding By The Yard - 3'x6' might be a good idea.

 

When I swapped carpets on my old FD, someone had cut out a portion of my new carpet for some electornics or something. It was simple enough to cut the foam off the old carpet and glue it to the new carpet (and fill in any gaps) with Great Stuff or similar. I've got the pics lying around, will check.

I suspect that between the old and new carpets you'll have most of the foam you need.

 

The carpet that's coming out of the car has been cut around the heater core, we're doing it right and pulling the heater core to install uncut carpet.

The cut carpet will likely be sold so I don't want to hack into it too hard.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I definitely want to put a proper automotive grade replacement in there and not just get some carpet padding from Home Depot or something.

Here are some pictures of my patch. Not a lot to see I guess.
The foam underneath the carpet is really stiff, and I thought Great Stuff worked really well. You could lay it down and shave it to shape.
After laying the carpet in you couldn't tell the difference, even if you knew where it was. My patch job was right by the passengers right foot.

Finally, What did you chose ? Any feedback on the replacement foam would be appreciated. I'm in the same case currently installing a new carpet without foam.
I've also read in another thread that some anti heat 'blankets' are working great along the transmission tunnel.

 

I did end up ordering some jute type padding for the project that worked great. I got it from StockInteriors.com, I got a 3' by 6' roll for $18.

Had plenty left over too.

I guess you had to put many layers to get the same thickness as the yellow original foam, isn'it ?
How hard is it ? I mean, when you put your feet on the carpet, does it feel soft under ?

 

I only put the jute in areas where it was originally - basically the floor board where your feet would go. The yellow foam had some missing parts around the center tunnel and I just used some expanding foam to fill in some of the voids. I think the yellow foam is mainly there for heat/noise insulation and to fill in the carpet with something solid, not really to be a soft surface or cushion.

Oh, well, thanks for those explanations !
So I'll try using expanding foam (polyurethane spray) in order to fill the voids, because the yellow foam under my carpet has been totally removed.
