replacement UIM bolt

Hi Folks,

The long bolt that holds the center of my UIM in place is showing signs of metal fatigue.

I checked with Ray at Malloy to no avail. They aren't available any longer.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Any points in the right direction before I start measuring thread pitch and bolt length.

thanks,

James

You could try giving these guys a call:

http://www.himni-racing.com/index.ph...es66eimfphjkk7

I've heard conflicting reports on their customer service however, so keep that in mind.

Or get a used one, many people should have quite a few in their parts hoards.

Post up a WTB or maybe someone will PM you after seeing this thread.

You could get a new bolt, but it will most likely look goofy or require a nonstandard tool to remove.

BTW, the '93s had chrome bolts, and the '94's and up had coated bolts that had a dull finish. If you want it to match the other nuts you may want to specify which you need.

thanks Rich and Dale!

The copper clad exhaust (i'm assuming prevailing torque) nuts look interesting on the Himni Racing site. Not that these have anything to do with the UIM bolt that I need.

I think that I'm going to go the used route. Everything under my hood looks stock at this point and I'd like to keep it this way ... not to mention avoiding the "goofy" look.

The point about chrome vs. dull is appreciated. I have a seller already and will ask what he has.

Anyone else care to PM me with a cost to ship (USPS is fine) a chromed long UIM bolt to 91311?

Cool ...

Has anyone tried these? Do they both stay put and not seize up?

I've been using them for YEARS on my old FC and now my FD.

They work GREAT, far superior to the stock Mazda nuts. Most times they will come off the stud no problem, but if they do pull the stud out they don't damage the stud like the Mazda nuts will do.

They're typically also re-usable.

Just curious: have you been torquing it down to spec? ( 12 ft lb I think)

The UIM doesn't need much torque on the fasteners.

I have ... 12 ft lbs sounds about right. I set my wrench to the lower end of the factory manual's specs. I stopped short of the spec on the long bolt that first time that I tightened it down. It was fairly obvious that the bolt was stretching as it was requiring too many turns to achieve spec.

When I pulled the UIM off this time I could see the stretch marks. I'm just glad that I stopped short of the bolt snapping. Using an easy-out to pull a snapped bolt out of the the LIM would have been a pain. Well, maybe not but I don' t want to worry about dealing with metal shavings around an intake port.

Could be my wrench is out of spec but I think that it's more likely that these cars and their metal is 20 years old. The UIM would probably be fine with 10 ft lbs ... I'll stop there next time.

I used Himni racing bolt kit. I ordered it, 9 days later it was sitting at my back door. Everything was correct. Had a nice finish as well. hope that helps

That appears to be a great deal.

I've snapped enough bolts, and finally learned what they feel like just before snapping, but I would prefer to never feeling a bolt twisting like that again.

Time to replace these oft-removed hardware bits.

I've learned from the same school of experience as you.

When it's time for a rebuild or perhaps a turbo pull I'll chase on of those kits down.

Another good thing with this kit - the water housing fasteners. I'm fairly sure you can't get those from Mazda either. I looked for part #'s but could not find them.

I think they still carry them, I've seen them on ebay from Atkins for ~10 each new.
