Removing turbos, seems stuck to manifold?

I'm trying to remove the turbo assembly from the engine, following the shop manual. The engine is on the garage floor, making it fairly simple to see and remove all bolts and nuts involved. The pic in the manual isn't very clear, but I'm quite sure I've unbolted the assmbly from the manifold. However, it won't move, not at all. I've even hit it with a rubber sledgehammer a couple of times, but nothing happens.

So what's the secret? Did they glue this thing to the manifold or what?

I broke two of the studs when removing the nuts, but I'd think a broken stud shouldn't hold the assembly anymore than a whole one, as long as the nut is off..

Any suggestions?

TIA

I think there was 8 bolts/nuts holding it on. One is hidden a little so make sure you remove them all before hitting it with a sledgehammer Mine just slid off after removing all the correct bolts/nuts. I'll see if I can find a picture to post.

Yes, 8 nuts/bolts i total.. two large (14mm) nuts at the rear, one 12 or 13 mm bolt low/in front of those.. Two 14mm nuts holding the little cover (looks like a BOP), and three 14mm nuts holding the front turbos exhaust housing to the manifold. Does that sound about right?

A picture would be great, I'll look for one too.

After a little computer magic on the shop manual PDF, it's not so unclear anymore.

I've removed all the nuts and bolts in the picture, and I believe the ones I tried to mark (excuse the artwork) are the ones holding the assembly to the manifold...

heres what I found. pretty much the same thing that you just posted. If you have taken all those bolts off then i don't know what to tell you besides "pull"

*edit: file to big

Ok, I'll try the "pull" thing tonight I soaked the thing in WD-40 yesterday so it might even have fallen to the floor by itself by now

I guess since I actually twisted two of the studs to the point where they snapped, what's left of them might've been deformed enough to lock the assembly in place.

I'll apply the "pull", "force" and "violence" methods, in that order

The rubber mallet ain't gonna cut it. Great for putting hubcaps on your Chevy, but that's about it.

Try tapping it gently and repeatedly with a dead blow hammer. It's got a plastic or resin head, (depending on how much you spend for it) and is partly filled with lead shot, won't mar the part when you hit it, and will deliver much more impact exactly where you want it. You'll need to have the engine immoblile so that it doesn't absorb the force of the blow by recoiling.

If that doesn't work, heat the whole base gently with a propane torch for about five minutes - move it around frequently - and then try the hammer again while it' still hot.

If that doesn't work hit the sonamabeach with a 10 lb. sledge. It probably still won't come off, but beating the **** out of it will make you feel much better, and provide a great excuse for going single!

If you bent the bolts I don't know what to tell you except start prying once the base is broken away.

Just for the record, it came off. I went for the sledge method immediately, but I used the sledge (a small one, maybe 4 lbs) to drive a flathead screwdriver in between the manifold and the exhaust housings. Once it started moving, it came off nicely.

The not-so-nice part of it is what I found in the manifold. Apex seal remains and various other small pieces of metal
