removing starter....TOTAL PIA!

Okay....this really, really sucked.

I thought the fuel filter sucked.

This took suckiness to the nth level!

If you have an automatic tranny car and the starter goes out, TAKE IT SOMEWHERE!!!

Bolts hidden, bolts impossible to get to, and once all the bolts are out, it is a Rubik's cube to get figured out how it comes out. And it only comes out one way. And it sucks.

Now I test the thing and it runs perfectly under no load, but then that is not that surprising. What was happening to me was that sometimes it would turn over normally, sometimes it would take ALL the amperage in the system to just barely turn over.

You know, if I continue to work on cars, I am gonna have to put in a lift. 'Cuz this working underneath with the car on jackstands just sucks.

I agree with you on the no lift situation.

I've been doing it with jackstands for 10 years now and it SUCKS. I used a friend's lift at his house to help him replace his engine and it was SOOOOO much easier.

I'm definitely going to have a lift put in at the next house I buy, but right now I'm in a townhouse and I don't think my ceiling is high enough in the garage

Heh. Leave it to an FD to make a normally simple job into a nightmare.

the other solution is...if you got an automatic...sell it and get a five speed.

I feel for ya man...I pulled my tranny last year on my back in the garage...not fun at all...granted..i have a 5spd...it still sucked.

I've been thinking about a lift also, seems like I'm allways under the car for something. It would be nice while working in the engine compartment also to be able to raise it up a few feet. but thats probably just my 42 year old back.
So bajaman you done with the starter, or still have the new one to go in.
Did you decide to keep the car?

hmm.. I don't know what you guys are talking about..

I replaced my starter last summer and it was a breeze. Took me less than 15 minutes maybe. But mine is a 5speed. The starter itself was small, lightweight, much easier r&r than the 82 Vette I had previously.

bajaman, if your having intermitant problems with your starter then check for a bad ground wire at the battery or a bad ground going to the starter. These ground wires once they corrode inside cause a high amperage draw and robs the starter from power/amps to turn over. How good is your battery as well??
