Hey all,

I'm getting ready to install adam c's "cheap bastard" intake mod in a few days, and I was wondering something. My FD is a '94 touring model, so it didn't come with dual oil coolers and I have the small black plastic cover on the passenger side small air inlet on the bottom of the front bumper.

What I was wondering is, should I remove that small cover to let more air flow into the general area of the airbox? Has everyone else pretty much removed theirs, or are you supposed to leave it if you don't have a 2nd oil cooler? And finally, how exactly do you get it out?

You won't gain anything unless you make a duct to bring air up. I'm not familiar with exactly what Adam's modified box has done to it; but if it opens up the bottom of the air box, then you could duct into it from there.

There isn't a lot of room down there. Damian (I think it's him) has a write up on it here on the forum. I did it as well (the duct comes up below my primary intake). Honestly, I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm of the opinion that any extra air brought in is a good thing.

Cool, I checked out some of his work. Very impressive!

Is there an easy way to remove that cap though, or do I have to take the whole plastic mudshield out from the bottom of the engine/bumper area to get access to it?

You'll probably have to unbolt/loosen at least that side of the undercarriage to have access to it. It's held on by some clips.

I got it off. I took a few bolts out of the plastic lining the bottom of the bumper, and slid my hand up there. Had to yank on the clips a bit but it's off with the clips intact.

Now I know why they put it there though. With it off and no oil cooler right behind it, the headlight assembly and headlight lense is visible if you look way up into the duct. Hopefully it's high enough where road debris won't hit it. I'll definately have to follow Damian's ram-air duct plan though, then nothing will be exposed.

Hi Ed,

I would recommend installing the Cheap Bastard kit with no other modifications. With the kit, the turbos will be able to pull all of the cool air that they need. Honestly, I don't think that you will gain anything with a duct.
