Removed shifter, now notchy? FSM incorrect..

The bottom bushing I have is different than what is shown in the FSM. It says that the top and bottom are the same, but they are not (minor difference).

I took off my shifter, replaced a few bushing (boot cup etc) and now it's super notchy. Also, my shifter had an extra rubber ring not shown in the FSM. I took it out and it was HORRIBLE, I put it in, and it's ok.

Also, there is no 'springyness' when I move the shifter around in neutral, it gets 'stuck' either left or right (before it used to 'spring' back to the middle).

Help??!

I have the same problem and i think its the spring. There a spring for the top and bottom metal bushing. I going to address the problem today and see what come from it.

If the bottom rubber boot is torn, does it impact anything other than the noise level?

It won't affect shifting. It will allow more exhaust heat into the shifter handle.

The first thing i would do is make sure you found as many peices of shift seat (or other bushings) that had broken and fallen into the gear oil as possible.
the FSM shows the correct order & parts, wave washer, bushing below shifter ball, bushing, wave washer, dust boot above it.
the only difference between the top and bottom bushings is the size of the notch, ray @ malloy sold me two bottom ones and said to just cut the notch larger for the top. worked great.

There are other differences. The original "bottom" bushing is thinner than the upper one. Also, the original bottom bushing and wave washer are separate pieces as opposed to the top one where the wave has tabs that lock into the bushing. Also, the bottom wave washer is larger in diameter and it's internal circumference (not much but side by side you can see it).

yeah, It was interesting the bushings ray sent me had the smaller notch, like for the bottom, but also the small squares for the tabs on the wave washer to lock into, like the top.
