I am debating on purchasing a 3rd Gen RX7. I have read through posts here and the many websites referenced on this site.

I have no plans of racing. I really would like the car mostly stock and don't mind doing the reliabilty mods. After these mods how reliable is the car if you monitor it. It will not be my primary car but I don't want to have to fix it once a month either. With the mods and assuming it is running within normal parameters will it be fairly trouble free?

Also, I am not a big fan of the modified "import" sound. Can I keep the stock exhuast with the exception of the downpipe mod? Or are there less import sounding exhuasts out there?

The stock exhaust is very quiet. With nothing but a downpipe the exhaust note is still very mild & is far from the Honda buzz.

As for reliability, that's up in the air. Some of these cars go for over 100K miles with few problems. Others spend most of their life with boost problems that never get realized. Then some get ported & turned into complete beasts.

 

You could go with a Racing Beat Dual tip catback. It has improved flow as compared to the stock "catback." Also keeps the look and isn't too much louder than the stock exhaust. Yet makes for a nice mod. If you do all the reliability mods to the car and monitor it closely (keep enough oil/coolant/fuel in it) you will be fine and the car will last quite a while. You will have to buy some instruments to monitor certain areas of the engine and the way it behaves...boost gauge, make sure your stock gauges work correctly, blah blah blah.
