Depends on miles. Look at the Mazda recommended maintenance schedule.

I bought my NEO from mazda trix, they are down the street from Baker, but was cheaper. Go figure, that's what you call local competition.

I prefer Redline to Mobile.

Hmm. Maybe I'll give the Neo a try next time.

I think RP is more hype then RL. Only Royal Purples race stuff is pure base stock synthetic. Well, there engine oils so I guess it's possible to be wrong on the trans fluids but I doubt it.

I didn't have enough cash ($17/qt) when I did mine so I only bought 1 qt of NEO HD and mixed with MTL in the trans and MT in the diff'. The gunk in there was never changed before but I also had the trans rebuilt and wasn't going to let it look like that again. Oh yeah, I didn't try different stuff back to back so I can only comment that i'm happy with the current mix.

$40/gal is quite affordable (especially to do both the diff and tranny). I'm definitely trying the 75W-90HD next time.

After reading this post I decided to try out Neo oil in my Tranny & Diff.
I have been a Redline user for years.

I keep records & had replaced the Tranny & Diff oil (Redline MT90 in the Tranny & 75-90 in the Diff) only 4k ago. I Normally change it every 10K

Today I drained & filled my Tranny & Diff with Neo 75-90 HD.

I took it for a drive & noticed a little difference for the better

I have a Mazdaspeed short throw shifter & it has always rattled at different rpms.
The Neo oil seamed to have quieted it down.

Felt similar when shifting cold. Maybe slightly easier going into second. When warm the shifter effort was slightly less.

The big question...............is it worth it?

ID say yes.

IM satisfied with Neo oil & will use it instead of Redline in my Tranny & Diff

It's hard to notice a "big" difference in quality synthetic oils. Had I switched from standard gear oil IM sure the difference would have been greater.

As how much you need. I would order 5 quarts. You can probably squeeze by with 4, but I also drained & filled the cavity that the shifter seats in.

Day 2 update.............

I must admit I do notice it shifts easier & is less notchy than Redline.

I have Jim Labs bushings so I hear all the gear whine from the Diff & tranny.
With Neo oil it's noticeably quieter.

Well worth the money & effort.

MTL and MT-90 is NOT a good choice for the tranny.

Redline 75-90 is a higher GL rated gear oil.

I had some bearings go out on me with MT-90 where 75/90 worked fine.

Is NEO a synthetic formula?

Do they have a web site?

Thanks, I was feeling lazy

I wish some independant lab could test RL, RP, Amsoil, M1, Neo, etc. and finally settle the dispute on who is better.

Based on personal use, I can tell you Neo is better! Neo is the One!

Man I wished I would have seen this thread before I decided to change my diff and tranny fluids the other day. I spent over $50 and got some 75w/90 Redline tranny fluid. I usually do my research in order to supply my car with the best of everything, except this time. I am currently running 75w/90 on both my manual tranny and differential. I now see that people that have previously ran Redline have used two different kinds (MT90 for transmission, and 75w/90 for differential). I do notice smoother shifts then before (it had been a while since they were changed). Could I be harming my tranny in any way by having 75w/90 in it instead of the MT90 stuff? If so, then I'll most likely buy this Neo oil and replace it with that. Let me know what you think.

That is because NEO is the manufacturer...Mazdatrix is one of their distributors. It isn't competition...but a distributor trying to sell at a price to maintain their distributor status from the manufacturer.

I've been using NEO for a bit now. I've used in a 240sx (engine and tranny), and used it in my daily driver (Saturn) just to see how things compare. I did so sparingly...for my own personal observation. I didn't run this stuff continously as it gets mighty expensive (for a 240sx and Saturn...just not worth the extra cost).

For the 240...the tranny was noticeably smoother. The engine burned oil...but w/ the NEO inside...it seemed to idle and run better.

For the Saturn...which also happens to burn oil...it ran better as well. Less oil consumption.

I've also tested their "Keep Cool"...their version of Water Wetter. This was tested in the 240. Temps were extremely low for the first couple of weeks. Then...temps went back to normal after that. I found some greasy type contamination in the radiator...thought this was odd? Will have to redo this test some other time to conclude anything.

I will say that I have quite happy w/ NEO products. From my limited use thus far...they perform well.

The president of Spoon uses NEO (oils, lubricants/greases, etc) in their cars. There are other top names that swear by NEO also.

I can't say that I've used Redline, Royal Purple, or Amsoil. I use NEO mainly because I know people at NEO/their distributors...therefore I can get it a little cheaper. But I've been happy w/ their products thus far.

Maybe I'll do a broad test one of these days...but for now...I stick to NEO.

Don't feel bad.

I started to see better results after the 2nd or 3rd fluid change.

It probably has to do with reducing the amount of residual dino gear oil in there.

IMHO Redline is over rated and sells by name recognition alone.
no......royal purple is name alone. Its so cheap that they manufacture it by the barrel and send it down hole with cement as a waste lubricant. Redline and Amsoil start from plant base stock like peanut oil....(higher heat and shear resisting propertities) Royal purple is regular olyphen basd oil that they cook. Castrol is done the same way. Mobile One and several others filed suite to get the government set a critirier on what process makes the end product a synth. hopefully we as consumers can be protected so we get what we pay for.

Neo doesn't work any better than average without the "plug in"

Neo

Well, I'm on the bandwagon. Hopefully the Neo will lessen the 2nd gear notchies better than the Redline does now. For what it is worth one apparently wants the 75w90 HD over the RHD for RX-7 uses. A little cheaper that way, too.

Thanks.

Guys, don't mean to throw a monkey wrench into anyone's plans BUT what about MOTUL. I seemed like most of the JGTC grid was running this stuff. It's also 100% ester based synthetic (plant based) so it's a true synthetic (not like the Castrols of the world). I'm curious to try this stuff. Any experiences?

From what i've been reading, concensus says Red Line isn't up to par with NEO, I got that much. But despite RP's (Royal Purple) not-so-special manufacturing origins and marketing hype how really do all these lubricant manufacturers rank out of curiosity?

Top of the Line vs Top of the Line:

- Motul
- Royal Purple
- Amsoil
- Neo

Glassman you mentioned that you have used previous synth brands before. I would only imagine oils is like gasoline, some setups like others brands better? But what I would be really curious to know is what really separates these brands apart performance wise in terms of.

- Transmission
- Differential
- Engine Oil (can't really use this category for rotaries for the *most* part but it would be nice to know which is best for piston based engines)
- etc.

I like to stick with whatever works. I don't mind paying a premium if it just works. I was very disappointed in Redlines performance in the cold. I use Neo for the transmission and diff and Mobil 1 for the engine because it has worked well for me, it's easy to get and cheap. I also use Evans coolant

The bottom line is get what you feel works best. I've tried to get Royal Purple locally to try out, but as of yet nobody carries it.
