Thumbs down Red Line Diffy Oil

I did contact RL, but they did not believe my notchiness problem was the result of using their gear oil. Oh well, another customer lost All have been forewarned about RL gear oil, so proceed at your own risk!

I don't believe it either. Changed to MT-90 this spring and I'm happy.

Redline MTL and MT-90 has no or almost no friction modifiers, thus the problem with notchiness that some of us have experienced. A friend of mine who had experience with the Redline MTL warned me not to use it in my transmission. I had already bought the Redline MT-90 for my transmission so I put it in. And I am sorry that I did. I may try to add the friction modifier I alluded to in my earlier post or just dump the Redline MT-90 in favor of a gear oil that already has the friction modifiers in it. I also plan to contact Redline as soon as I can regarding this issue. I've heard of way too many people having issues their MTL and MT-90.
Traditional gear oils in differentials, especially limited slip type, require friction modifiers that make the oil more slippery. But, very slippery oil in a synro trans makes it more difficult to speed up/dn free spinning gears by frictional contact at the syncro cones.

Redline MTL (too thin) and MT90 have additives or modifiers that tend to increase grab at the syncro cones, for less crunch when shifting. They were among the first to offer this type of dedicated synthetic transmission oil.

Neo also sells this type of trans oil. In fact, GM, Honda Saab, Chrysler, and many others now provide this same type of 'grabby' gear oil for their new cars.

All of the these mfg's understand that conventional slick friction modifiers (for differentials) are NOT the thing to use in syncro transmissions.

It's possible that the slick stuff worked well for GS+, but likely for all the wrong reasons in his isolated case.

I have the MT-90 in my transmission and it is a little Rough shifting gears. I dont have anything to compare it with since i just did an auto to manual conversion. Im in the process on upgrading my turbos and fuel system so im going to switch out the fluid at the same time to redline 75w90 to see if there's a difference. Hopefully its the fluid causing the roungh shifting and not the transmission.

Which redline did u have in ur tranny?

Usually, the 2nd+ time u change the tranny fluid it improves. THis is probably from removing more of the old fluid out.

RL>RP>Amsoil

Why?

2 years ago at SS5 I was at the Sunday event at Racing Beat and took one of the RP reps aside and we talked about synthetic oils and so forth.

We both agreed that Amsoil is shitty.

But when I asked him about Redline, he didn't say anything bad about them.

Now, if u think u had a better product, u would not hesitate to diss the other guys.

Gee, I wonder.........

I'm using 250w RL shock proof.

That stuff is soooo thick. kinda like paste.

Make sure u let any excess drain out via the fill hole.

Or else u may have too much and that can force out of the seal.

I'm not sure which it was, I had KD Rotary put it in. My trans worked fine before it was put it in, was crap with it in and worked great when I took it out. If it's advertised as a product for the transmission I shouldn't have to worry about it working as expected. In my mind it is cut and dry, Redline sucked and RP worked great in my car. Redline has a great name for themselves and perhaps their products work better in different applications but personally I think they are way over rated.
