You're doing the lord's work here!

If you can get it to an inventory of seals needed to rebuild, that would be AMAZING. This is going to be a problem more of us run into as time goes along.

Got some more rings in

On the right are the new packings I ordered with the old on the left. The 014 packing for the large end of the valve is correct while the 015 was too small. The new 012 for the center was on the money as well. The 009 quad ring, however, was too big. I need to order a 008 and possibly a 007 and check the fitment on those. I received squarecut 009s for the tops of the solenoids, however I'll have to pull the manifold back apart to check the fitment on them.

I'm having issues with my ABS pump and I'm in the process of trying to rebuild it as well. Do you have any updates on the o-rings needed Matt? I am hoping to find a complete list like Dale was saying and go through and rebuild the whole thing.

I haven't had any recent updates. This project is very casual so updates are slow on it. I still need to order the quad rings in new sizes to check fitment. I'll probably order some today so I don't forget :P. I'm close to having a completed list though!

My brakes pedal goes all the way to the floor... I'm just gonna throw the ABS pump away and go with napa auto parts lines to cut/bend/flange or buy a expensive cool kit? I dunno... CR rex can you recommend a cool kit?

Kenji, no pedal could also be a master cylinder issue, not the ABS pump. You should describe your problem in greater detail, but perhaps in another thread. Don't throw out your ABS pump just yet...

I'm just going to throw this monkey wrench in here.

Are we sure that this Japanese ABS doesn't use JIS B2401 sized O-Rings instead of good old American AS 568 sized O-Rings? Many are interchangeable, but a few are unique, check out this cross reference chart.

Placed another order for some more O rings.

Now that I don't daily drive the Rx7 and I had my back surgery, its a bit easier to work on the car now :P. Went to take the rx7 for a drive for the first time in maybe 2 months and notied the brake fluid was low [enough to turn on the light!] and that my ABS pump is, once again, wet. Fed up, I placed an order for all the o rings and I'm finally gonna rebuild this thing before the next track day.

If all works out, I'll have a complete list.

Matt, I speak for hundreds of us when I say: thank you. People like you help keep thisncar viable. I am personally eager to find a positive result so I can reinstitiute my ABS. I am terrified in the rain. Maybe I’m just a chicken.

Thanks dude!!

Hi guys,

Funny that this topic comes up in the FD section because the exact same subject came up in the FC section. Here is the FC thread: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...t-fix-1100699/ Maybe a few of the o-rings from that thread could be applied to this thread?

Multipurpose O-Ring Steam-Resistant EPDM, 2mm Wide, 4mm ID : 1172N77
x-profile, buna-n, 2.5mm x 17mm : 1200N166

these come in packs of 100 with the exception of the x-rings which are still a 10 pack. Order 1 package and you'll be set for life

I sold the car a few months ago, but as of that time it was dry as a bone.
Cheers,
George

mdp,

You certainly threw in the monkey wrench! Do you have a valid link to that chart? It gives me the dreaded "404...not found" error.

Nothing of any value to add here except that I think it's funny that your name is George and he posted a picture of a monkey who actually resembles Curious George.

That's all...

Nick,

No offense taken! LOL.

That's the hazard associated with bearing the "George" name.

Took a look at that second gen topic. After reviewing his sizes he used, I can confirm a lot of them are actually similar in size! The X rings he used below the solenoids are NOT compatible however. The 1.5 x 22mm on top of the solenoids are a good fit, however that size is NOT common and I feel maybe a custom order in EPDM. This is part of the reason why I’ve been looking at American standard size O rings. They’re a lot more available and available in the material you need. As of now, ALL the seals I have ordered for my project are EPDM with the exception of the X rings that go on the valves for the motor. Those are Buna N unfortunately, however I’m willing to take the chance for fitnent purposes right now to overlook the material. If my fitment checks out, I’ll look into the price of getting EPDM X rings custom made assuming they don’t last a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks for that post!!

Matt,

No problem, glad to lend a hand! I wonder if contacting ORings, Inc and send them samples would pay off? That may give you direct feedback, faster turnaround times, and near perfect replacement o-rings. It never hurts to ask for help, right?

Cheers,
George

If my first attempt fails, I’ll see if they can lend a hand with sizing. I work with a lot of fluid based systems and packings so I’m not really a stranger to the concept. As soon as I feel that it is beyond my level of expertise (interference fit tolerances, metric vs standard etc) then I’ll ask the questions. But sometimes it’s fun to do things on your own first :P Not to mention O rings are dirt cheap.

Looks like they changed the sites layout so you dont need to download the pdf anymore. This link should take you to the Japanese Oring size chart. JIS B 2401 Metric O-Rings - Global O-Ring and Seal

I know some of you have been waiting awhile for this. Think I have them nailed down. How nasty my pump was, old packings vs new, etc. going to finish reassembling it in a bit. Did something stupid and didn’t track which solenoid was for left/right/rear. So I need to hit up a local friend so I can check his for locations

My pump wasn't leaking but it was causing my front calipers to stick after pressing the pedal. Do you think replacing these o-rings will fix my problem? I was thinking something was seized or stuck. The weird thing is my pump is beautiful, low mileage -- but it's got an issue and your pump looks like that and just leaks lol

Matt,

Your are doing very well on the repair. Thanks for taking those photos! Best of luck identifying the left, right, and rear solenoids. I can't wait to see it all done.

George

I had this issue in my Yamaha GTS1000 motorcycle years back. I took apart the ABS pump after completely going through everything else with no luck. If you look at those screens on the pistons you can see in some of the pictures, they had gummed up with crap so they would allow brake fluid to flow one direction but not the other. So when I hit the brake, the caliper would squeeze, but when I let up the pressure wouldn't release for a really long time. Cleaning out those screens fixed the problem and I bet this is exactly the same problem you are seeing.

Took a few minutes of reviewing the wiring diagram to figure out which solenoid was what. The upper manifold is marked for FR, FL, and R as well. Not a big deal if you forget to keep track of what is what.
Not too hard to take it apart and put it back together. Used some leftover caliper rebuild grease to lube up all the o rings and put everything back together. Found out you can disassemble to solenoids too to clean the metal casings as well. I just hit everything with a scotch brite scuffing pad to take surface corrosion off. Brought some youth back to it too. It’s rejnstalled in the car, but I need to go buy some brake fluid. I’ll get some fresh bottles of RBF600 tomorrow and bleed/leak check this thing. More updates then!!
