Rebuild Time (Pictures from start to finish)

Hey guys, even though I'm new to this forum, I've been familiar with the FD for quite some time now. My FD's coolant seal gave out so I thought this is my chance to pull everything out and rebuild with all new parts because I don't know what the previous owner did. I'm currently collecting my parts and going to start the rebuild of my shortblock next week and thought I'd share with you the progress from start to finish. Currently the car is at my friend's sho getting prepped for a twin turbo set up using Garrett T3/TO4E's which I'll have pictures up once I can get the rebuilt engine down there. Attached are pictures of the parts I currently have, next week I'll start having the rebuild pictures.

Some more. Plenty more, just trying to edit the photos.

Everything looks nice, but I'd recommend swapping out that downpipe for a proper mandrel-bent one. The one you have is made for a RHD fd, thus the crush-bend.

Upgrayedd 06-25-07 08:35 PM

Why the HKS downpipe when you're upgrading the twin set-up to Garrets that most likely are going to have a custom manifold?

ooo looks like youve got a lot of new toys to play with. have fun! keep us updated and good luck!

I know, that one will be going up for sale soon. I uploaded that one by mistake. It's brand new but I decided to go custom route.

Do the Flex-A-Lite fans flow more air than the stock fans? Just curious.

A friend of mine ran that in his 93 R1 FD, I think it was designed that way so the O2 sensor is out of the way. Would like more info on this...

I have the same one. It still retains the O2 sensor on top of the neck.

The steering shaft interferes with the exhaust routing on Right Hand Drive RX7's the crushed design is to circumvent that.

FWIW a little exhaust restriction is not that detrimental especially if youre concerned by boost creep.

The HKS down pipe was the original plan for just reliable modifications (how many of us have been through that), coolant seal went bad, decided to go all out. Now that I'm going custom, it will have dual 3" down pipes and dual exhaust, haven't decided on what mufflers yet, any suggestions?

Boost creep is for suckers ;).

I have a big Tial wastegate and a 4 inch downpipe, no problems here :icon_tup:

Spiritrmazda, look into magnaflow mufflers, they sound great and do a decent job of keeping the noise at a reasonable level....

spiritrmazda 06-26-07 12:16 PM

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely look into the mufflers. Anyone with a dual exhaust FD set up yet? I saw some photochops but nothing someone has done yet for real yet. What about Racing Beat? I also plan on having them fabricate a custom twin core v-mount intercooler.

spiritrmazda 06-27-07 11:09 PM

My downpipe is up for grabs check it out:
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=666278

Mazdatim, I uploaded that picture by mistake, since I'm going custom with 2 3" downpipes, I'm selling my HKS downpipe.

As for the dual exhaust, my friend got me 2 HKS carbon TI mufflers, still debating on using them but they might go up for sale later on too.

Guys....never received any thread feedback on my question. What's the verdict on these fans versus the stock FD fans and shroud? Marginally or significantly better? Just curious.

I'll let you know once they're installed. I plan on doing a custom v-mount twin core intercooler for my set up.

I've seen a demonstration of the Maradyne fans, and was seriously impressed. Might want to consider them as well.

New rotor housings, just picked them up from Mazdatrix earlier. Heres a few pictures, going to street port them, once I'm done, I'll have pictures of those too. If I can manage to somehow sell my downpipe and 3mm seals, I'll buy new rotors too, saw a great deal from Japan2LA.

Please update: I've wanted to do twin GT25's with true dual exhaust for a long time but just couldn't justify the time and expense. Since I can't fabricate it myself, the cost would be insanely astronomical. There's no reason to do dual 3" though. You could easily do dual 2" without clearance issues and still have plenty of flow. You could get the housings, rotors and everything else cheaper from Japan but Mazdatrix is local. If you are really going to do this then look in to my idea of using Tial turbo's with a V-Band flanges.

Didn't they have a twin GT25 from RX7Store? I paid about $10,000 for my twin turbo set up. I don't have any contacts over in Japan for housings so I bought most of my rebuild parts from Mazdatrix. I'm working on the rebuild this week which I'll have pictures step by step as much as I can. Tomorrow I am going to street port my new housings, can't wait.

spiritrmazda 07-06-07 12:21 AM

I just tore the block apart and cleaned the parts this morning. Started the race porting, I will post pictures tomorrow.

Hey Rich,

Impressed enough to buy them for your car? Are you still running the stockers??

Just finished semi-race porting my irons and housings. Now I need to sand down the areas ported and take all of the irons and housings to a place with a parts washer. Starting the rebuild during the week, after the rebuild, I take it to get a manifold fabricated for the twin T3/TO4E's.
