rebuild or new engine?

ive come across a 94 rx-7 with a blown motor and i am wondering if i should have the motor rebuilt (by alamo rotory in san antonio) or replaced. i am pretty familiar with the 13b-rew and i know the prices on both options, but i am curious about any opinions you might have. one more thing, will an engine from the upcoming rx-8 be an easy install or too pricey and difficult? thanks

When you say replace, does that mean a remanufactured engine? If you found a place that sells new engine, I'd like to know where. I guess it comes down to what you want done to the engine. If you want it ported and modified, get it rebuilt. If you want it stock, get a remanufactured or rebuilt, depending on price. Since the RX-8 is so new, it'll probably be difficult finding an engine. It might also require a lot of modification to get it to fit. I don't think it would be an exact replacement since they change some stuff around. If you happen to find one, I'd like to know how much they are going for.

thanks for the input. as far as the remanufactured engine, i found a website called pineapple racing that sells engines. they can be ordered with or without porting or 3mm apex seals. they start at 2500 for a stock spec engine. i cant remember the url though, sorry.

HA! http://www.pineappleracing.com/

Typically, the prices you see there are to rebuild YOUR engine. You have to get it out and send it to them.

A "brand new" engine from mazda does not exist for this car. Mazdatrix does sell an essentially brand new engine in the $6145 (go to http://www.mazdatrix.com/engnum3.htm ) range.

I bought a reman from Malloy mazda and sent it to Pineapple to get rebuilt. They will port it gladly if you wish them to. Call Rob at Pineapple and discuss what you want to do... he'll give you some good suggestions.

I live like 15 miles away from Pineapple. Like spurvo says, you have to send them your engine. They'll charge you a core charge if you don't send them your engine. I just had my engine rebuilt from them like 2 weeks ago. Instead of sending my engine out, I just dropped my car off there. Save myself some shipping cost. I'm really happy with their work so far. Engine is silky smooth like a new car.
