I think it's kinda cool (although the red interior doesn't agree with me), but man....the passengers better be shorter than 5'5" and have a neck like a giraffe, otherwise they're gonna be scrunched up like sardines, and not be able to see out of the car much...

LOL, man. I've raced people with people laying across on top of the bins... they didn't enjoy it at least not until I passed the enemy.

Of course she's only 3 feet tall, has no teeth and a flat head so I can rest my beer on it.
I love her just the same.
If you guys want to actually carry another passenger back there what might make some sense is to mount a seat sideways - Mercedes had this as a very rare option on some of their early 70's 2 seater convertibles. Kind of a "jump seat."
Hmmm, think I'll make a prototype - anyone interested in buying one?

The majority of FDs over here in the UK have rear seats as they are imports (the 124 genuine UK cars! have 2 seats). I needed the rear seats to get my 5 year old son in the back, but they are only any good for this (a bit of a joke really)!
Funnily enough, i can sit in the back (im 6 foot tall) with my son in the driving seat....!

Insurance goes by VIN number, not whatever you do to the car to make it have less insurance... the only thing i know that you can do is cover MORE things (sound system, etc) which will make it cost more. I dont know if ANY insurance company in the US will cover an RX-7 with rear seats for lower insurance.... they'll probably just say "oh, do you mean you want your rear seats insured? add 10 bucks a month and it's a deal" and then you'll have to beat the hell out of them before they realize that import 7's came with rear seats and people import them to put in their cars.

you can lower your insurance by installing an alarm system, have the TAD system in (i.e. the etched numbers in the glass), etc... none of these are part of the VIN, and any of them you can do after the fact (i.e. if your stock car came without an alarm, you can add one) and get your insurance lowered....

You guys are knocking the rear seats a bunch. Obviously there good for something if Mazda provided them.
I can sit in the back, I haven't had anyone take a ride though. They're great for holding bags; and I'll be able to carry a lot more on trips. The bins always left something to be desired because they create so much unusable space. Maybe if Mazda had created some kind of luggage system that fit into the cavity; but even then it would have to be designed in such a way to get it in and out easily.It's much harder to get a static object in back than it is a person.
Another note on the unusable space, there is a huge amount of it covered by the bin shroud. The most annoying thing about the bins was not being able to put anything on top, because it slides around to no end. There really isn't a good way to wedge anything in place either, because all the surfaces are slick and curved. Sure, I can put it up front, but I don't like looking at my luggage while I'm driving.
Perhaps Mazda should have relocated some of the cars electronics into the lower area to clean up the engine bay; but then I couldn't have the seats.

The seats look great!!!
I need some for my car.
I think I read somewhere that the Japanese cars that came with these rear seats had different front seat sliders that were up slightly higher so that the rear passenger could put his feet under the front seat.

The Japanese seats were set higher and they had a stop to limit there track motion.
The non-Japanese seats were set lower and allowed more travel (along with the deletion of the rear seats); just for more room.
It would be easy to add some rubber spacers/bushings to set the seats a little higher (along with longer bolts); I think I could get away with it. But for anyone over 6', it probably wouldn't work too well.
I would like to mention there really isn't much of an issue with the distance b/t the back of the front seats and the front of the rear seats. As long as you're normal driving position isn't all the way back, children could definitely ride in the back.

My buddy has an S2000, he's about 6'3"; when I get the chance I'm gonna measure the distance b/t his seat bottom and the roof...just to compare.

Believe me, you cant slide a piece of paper under my seats, even the carpet drags!
