Rear antenna making wirr/grinding noise...

i have the same thing happen. at first the atennae would have trouble going up. now it doesn't go up. my guess is that the motor gears are toast, i dont listen to the stereo so i never bothered to fix it.

If the motor makes noise, then it should just be the mast that needs replacing. I can not verify this, just going by what I was told. You can order the parts for under $50 from Mazdaformance or the whole antenna for less then $120.00.

What do you mean? You can get just the OEM antenna mast for about 22 bucks from Mazda. Do a search on "Antenna replacement" for detailed instructions. It's one of the easiest repairs to do, especially when you allow the antenna motor to "pull" the new antenna mast nylon strip down into the base as the final step.

Sorry, I doubled the mast price by mistake. I tried to use my memmory (D'oh) instead of opening my saved mail.
Replacement:
New Antenna $110
Rebuild:
Replacement Mast $25
Sleeve for antenna shaft $5.50

can you just "install" a different type of antenna if you want? Like if I get a mercedes style small euro style rubber antenna, is there a way to remove the motor and everything and wire up the euro one?

I recently had the same problem. Sounds like the plastic rack (ribbed plastic cable that pulls antenna in/out) is broken. Get a new one from the dealer for around $35. the hardest part will be taking off the paneling to get to the antenna assembly. All the insert tabs need to be removed in order to faciliate removal of the panels. Look very carefully and use a flat head screwdriver to take the semi-stubborn inserts out. Carefull not to break them! At $2 a piece they ain't cheap!
