re-painting my FD
Hi guys
I've heard a lot of criticism about montego blue rx-7's... and i have to say that i agree. I really hate the green that shows up most of the time. I've always wanted a white '7. I think they look so much cleaner and really show off the lines of the car. I've been told, however, that if i were to re-paint the car the cheap way (as in w/o removing the engine, lights, doors, trunk, etc.) it will lower the value. Is this true? Should i repaint it a dark color that sort of blends into the MB engine bay?
There are so many nice bodykits out there.... most of which i think would NOT look as nice if MB.

Well, usually yes... If you have one color on the outside of the car, and then you open up the engine bay and it's a different color.... would you pay the same price for that kind of car than one that has the same color everywhere (plus I think that looks bad, IMO).
If you are going to change colors, IMO, you should change it everywhere. Black cars can get away with it, since having the engine bay black isn't that bad though.
Just my opinion, but I would say that if you are going to get the car repainted, get it done right the first time. Spend the money to have it "really" repainted. Most good shops can repaint a majority of the engine bay area without removing the entire engine.

why would you not want to take off the trunk and doors? The engine bay is going to be hard to paint but the door and trunk jams? That should be a must when changing the color on any car

what's an average price for a repaint??? removing parts of the engine to paint car scares me...i don't trust anyone except KDR to even open the hood of my car...am i being over protective? i do agree with doing everything else right.....i have a 93 VR and i was thinking about changing the color to the new gunmetal grey...and leaving just the engine bay red...and painting brake calipers red to match... what do you think???

For a *good* paint job, you are probably looking at around $3000-5000 depending on the color and paint price.
There are a few FD's on here that changed colors and the price of the paint job was in the neighborhood of $10k (I think those guys switch to the Kandy colors though).

GREAT CAESAR'S GHOST THAT'S EXPENSIVE....
i might as well try to sell my '93 MB and pick up a white '94 instead. With that kinda cash, think of all the performance stuff u can buy! Well ok, not really that many, but STILL :P

Yea I had Montego and hated it too. I changed over to Innocent blue mica. I had everything painted and they did not have to remove the engine. I got a really expensive shop to do it. You can not tell anywhere that the car wasn't straight from the factory. It cost about 7k to get it all done. I would sugeest that you do get the door jambs and engine bay etc. cut in also. If you don't your car will lose value because no one wants a car that looks half-***. White would be a good choice.
BTW It's not Gunmetal grey Team Chin it's Titanium Grey 25G

What in the hell would look good with a tan interior aside from VR? I like VR, but I like white even more. Would white look good with a tan interior?

thanks...for color code...didn't know what it was called...i was just refering to it as gun metal....ya as for tan interior...nothing looks better then the red and tan...if your going through all the trouble the get the car repainted for 7k you should get a new interior too....the interior is the worst thing about the car....it's very cheap looking....

a 3k job is like factory, but with out jambs. a 5k is great. and anything over 5k look like you never have to wax her again, you cant tell if she is wet or dry. i had a mb..and yes, i loved the color so i sought it out...but my ex keyed the **** out of her. i wanted to go custom from there soooo.... i opted for the 3k and got the color to be the same blue as you saw when the sun hit the mb with alot of pearl and some gold fleck in it. that was a beautifull 7. i totaled her though. i didnt paint the jams bc it wasnt too far off a color.
but for vr....dude, you have NO choice but paint the jambs unless you are useing some color BASED on red. trust us.

man, i dont even understand why you guys dont like mbm!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love the color myself. especially when its a new paintjob like mine. it looks sooooooooooo good when its clean and freshly waxed. dont get me wrong. . . i love a black fd. i think that is THE color for an fd, but i would rather have my mbm anyday over that white or red.
