the r85 would be perfect on a car with a big port/aftermarket intake or on a track car. it lacks nothing up top. i did a quick dyno extremely rich and my hp was going straight up at 8000 rpm.

Just FYI, the turbo in the above pics is the GT35R from A-Spec.

install update

ok, I have more pics here, got the new larger wastegate installed and got it plummed back to the dp (ill have more pics showing that later), so I was able to do a 'hard' install and get eveything setup to start the car for the first time since winter started. I had to make some mods to the turbo kit and/or my car in order for it to work the way I wanted. Here are some pics with notes:

Here is a fun shot showing the turbo with the compressor housing off, look at that helicopter blade!!! LOL

Here is a pic of the 'mods' I did to the compressor housing in order to get the pipes to fit/work the way I wanted with my intercooler setup.

The turbo-to-carframe space is very tight and I wanted the turbo housing to have a bit more 'wiggle' room to the car frame so I 'moded' the car frame a bit so that it had a bit more space from the turbo housing

This is what that space used to look like:

A shot of the kit in place. Keep in mine the convoluted piping setup from the turbo to intercooler is temporary, at least thats the plan, it may ned up like that forever (hehehe)

Another shot of the kit in place, the air filter is also temporary, I already have a larger one ready to go in a better place later (the radiator ducting ram air slot location):

Hey Damian,

Nice setup, as is usual!

With that short of a section for the hose to grip coupler to grip to, I wouldn't be surprise if you have trouble keeping the coupler connected at mid to upper psi's. I'd recommend that you weld that first bend off the turbo once you know what your final configuration will be.

BTW, get the feeling there will be a bigger blow-off in your future as well. ;-)

Anyways, thanks for the usual insightful post.

Looking good. Do you have a target date for the dyno? I'm very interested to see numbers from other tuners.

already there :-) that apexi bend is a temp one i am using to get the car running, its only 2.5 and I need to order a 2.75 elbow to weld on the turbo. but the tight radius 'cast' type elbows are very hard to find in the 2.75 size :-(

heheh, possibly,...however i wont be running much boost (12 to 15 psi) so not much need for anythign bigger unless i get crazy and run a mind boggling 17 psi :-) heheheh.

yep, stve kan come in to tune on april 1, 2 and 3, ... so one of those days ill be on the dyno. Like i mentioned before, im not runnig much boost so this isnt gonna be one of those monster 500 rwhp kinda things, im hoping for a clean, safe road racing tune of maybe 380+ rwhp at 12 psi, and 400+ at 15 psi.

Hey Damian-
Which intercooler is that? and why havn't you gone to a v-mount yet? money, or what? also, is Road America your "home course" so to say? i may be living up in the UP this summer, so i may drive down there to watch some club days. can't afford a FD yet, but love watching road racing, so the drive would be justified.

If you wanted to put those numbers down why did you go with a turbo that looks like it could put down 700 easy? Just curious, awesome setup.

Well, the dyno on KGparts.com shows like 458 whp @ 15 psi. The numbers are STD rather than SAE. I would hope to see no less than 420 whp from a ported motor running 15 psi with AFRs in the low 11s.

My goals for my car are something like 425 whp on pump gas (~1 bar) and over 500 @ 20 psi while running 100 octane. Those numbers aren't going to happen with my setup, so I'm looking to upgrade.

Keep us posted on the dyno results. I know you will.

the intercooler came from pettit i think, however im pretty sure its a copy of kevin wyums design. its basicaly the old asp large intercooler.

vmount? no need to go vmount, my setup works just fine :-)

roadamerica is about 6 hours away for me, so its a bit of a drive, my actual 'home' track is BIR, its only a couple hour drive and last time i was there with the vette club during a oppen lapping event I was told I was the fastest car there :-) this was the same day the lambo gallardo was there (whoot)

ill be at RA with NASA on april 8, 9, and 10...and again with the fbody club on april 16,17... come find me and ill take you for a spin :-)

heat, heat, and heat....

is a road track car, so think about what its doing, basically its at WOT/full boost for 20 minute or longer sessions, over and over again, all day long. heat is the killer hear, it wasnt overheating before, but it was right in a safe zone at 12 psi, as you add bost the heat goes up, but if you add a bigger turbo it can push the same psi with less heat, so basically i did 2 things with the bigger turbo, allowy myself to run the same psi with a bit more power and less heat, and increased the potential to run more boost without worring about adding to much more heat.

yeah, i agree that it 420 on my setup at 15 psi is probable, im just keeping expectation low so that anythign over 400 at 15 psi is just gravy :-)

ok, here are some pics of the wastegate gettin plummed back to the dp on my the r85 kit. there are many ways to approach this, i think we found a compromise with the possible ways to do it.

the raw amterials

my mech guru Noah from speedlab is setting up the bends

tacin the bends together for a test fit

after we (really it was just Noah) got all the pipes in the right spot, it was tacked together and sent off to the welders

a shot after it came back from the welders

aother

and another

a shot of the final install

the WG

another angle of the final install

here is a simple how to summary:

in my case my materials were 1.75 OD SS pipes, one was a 90 deg bend and one was a 45 deg bend, I purchased them from burns stainless ( http://www.burnsstainless.com/ )

part numbers:

lb-175-30-16-304 (90 bend - 1.75 OD)
45-175-30-16-304 (45 bend - 1.75 OD)

Tell Noah that welding with exposed skin is a fast way to get cancer. Not smart.
Kit looks good though.
