I don't believe there is any difference in the seats between base, touring, or R1, just the covers. Are you looking for R1 logos on the headrests, or just looking for cloth rather than leather? I looked for cloth when I redid my seats this spring, without success. I ended up getting the leatherseats.com seat covers, but had the middle made out of synthetic suede rather than leather to improve my "butt grip." Just an alternative. Your best bet on cloth upholstery may simply be taking your car to a local auto uphostery shop and having them recover the seats in the cloth you want.

Currently OEM is the only way to go. From Malloy, a new set of covers in R1 material will run you $2000 even.

As the others have stated, the seat cushions and frame are identical in all trim types.

Best thing to do is watch for a better set of used R1 seats or take your seats to an upholsterer and have them redo it.

thanks for the replies. i figured the seats were the same, that's why I asked about covers. I saw the suede seats at leather seats.com group buy but I didn't care for the black/tan combo. maybe black/black or black/grey would look good though.

I'd also talk to local upholstery shops - get out your phone book and make some calls. The R1 seats are actually a suede-like cloth material, similar to microfiber that's used on a lot of furniture nowadays. Anyhow, I bet you could probably have the seats recovered for a VERY reasonable cost.

I had a set of TurboII seats recovered in top grade vinyl (which looked and felt AWESOME, btw) with all new padding and everything for $300. Yes, that's for both seats. Call around and see what you can come up with - the suede-like material should be substantially cheaper than leather.

Yes. It was within a few dollars of $2k based on a quote I got from Malloy this month. That's for new bottom covers, seat backs, and upper bolster covers for each side. I can quote part numbers if you're interested, but you can look them up in the FD parts list as 'trim'.

The good stuff is genuine Ultrasuede (aka Alcantara) for automotive applications is as expensive as leather, believe it or not. Hopefully a similar microfiber suede isn't as bad.

Dale,

Do they still have the pattern they used for your seat? I'd love to get some for my 89 TII since the bolster and worn out and the seat needs a good cover put on it anyway.

This was AGES ago. They just took the seats, made a pattern off the stock seat covers, and re-covered them. They also did all new padding and everything.

OK, imagine the MOST sorry leather seats you possibly can. Giant hole in the driver's side bottom cushion with foam hanging out. Bolsters totally shot. Leather so crappy it leaves black stains on your pants on a wet day. Now, look at the after -

For a good upholsterer, this is not rocket science. I had those seats for some time (to tell the truth, I bought them third-hand - one of the local guys had them done, sold them to another guy, then I bought them for $120. No kidding! ) and they held up and looked great.
