questions for efini twin users

i just picked up a set of 99 spec twins with all the goodies for cheap.

1. they need a rebuild. although the manifolds/snails are different, the CHRA's look the same as my 93 spec turbos. do they take the same rebuild kit? like the one turbo city sells?

2. the down pipe flange has a different bolt pattern, do i have to get a 99 spec downpipe?

The 99-twins are outwardly identical to the 93-98 twins. I suspect you do NOT have 99-twins there....

You may have bought Cosmo twins. There are only 2 sets of twins Mazda made for the FD - the 255hp version that we had in the US, and the 280hp version that was available in certain models on the '99+ cars. The 280 twins are direct bolt-ons - downpipe, oil/water lines, everything bolts up.

The Mazda Cosmo in Japan was available with a 13b twin turbo or a 20b twin turbo. Both those twin turbo sets are substantially different than the FD's, and don't perform as well either.

Ugh. Please don't say "280hp Twins". They are no more 280hp Twins than the stock twins...

well, they definitely came with a 99 spec Y pipe that bolts together and the downpipe flange has 3 studs instead of 4 (and there isn't one missing).

the turbine wheels are noticeable smaller and they say HITACHI on the compressor side.

here is a link to the auction that has many photos on it:

the one picture of the turbine is blurry, but it doesn't look like it has the abraidable seals. I don't think it's the 99spec

but to answer your question, the 99spec turbos can mate up with any standard downpipe. My M2 fits great.

Not 99 spec turbos. Like they stated, more than likely the cosmo turbo set up.

lol,

in this thread we have...

'280hp' twins (which, yes, is dodgy because they are ps, aren't the only reason for the '280', and make more than 280 anyway).

'efini' twins - which is totally wrong, because efini ended in 97

'99-spec' - which is wrong, because they started in 98

and in the end, they aren't even 280/efini/99-spec

!

i know efini is probably wrong, but that is what they are commonly referred to and was the most effective/attractive title

and besides... stop griping, you know what i meant! even rx7store.net calls them efini
