Question any help is greatly appriciated!!

Hey What's up Everyone, let me first introduce myself. Names Christopher, I'm out here in Nor cal New to the RX7 scene. Hell last one i touched was a 85 12a...but regardless im finally picking up a 93 FD...got it for a steal of a deal...only problem is and which also brings me to my question after my brief ramble is. The car is blowing black smoke which from my technical expertise is Gas. I've been told that the and i quote Inner manifold gasket/seal needs to be replaced...after research i couldn't seem to find that particular part. So has anyone else had a similar problem like this....also i was advised not to start the car...it starts and runs, but of course blows the black smoke...and im not talking about the normal black smoke..but hey any help is greatly appreciated...and anyone else out here in the Bay Area??

note this post is a repeat thread, i apologize first and foremost. Accidentally put the first thread in the wrong section.

well i just got the car so this is the list of mod's i am aware of...sorry for not listing those and the other details to begin with

basic ****

greddy bov
greddy a/f gauge
turbo timer
3in cat back exhaust with apexi muffler

now the story behind how this car got the way it was is...the previous owner was heading up towards lake Tahoe...for those in this area going from 60ft msl to 6k feet msl nice hike! the car overheated. the guy shut the car down asap as he knew how catastrophic it could potentially be. towed the car back to Travis AFB let the local shop on base look at it.....after he got it back from them it started blowing black smoke continuously from start he was afraid of the possible damage so shut it down and towed it to Sacramento to get it looked at by a pro...found a guy out there who knew rx7's pretty well and what he told me was as i mentioned an inner manifold seal...which i have yet to locate...but of course i could be blind...from what ive looked up it could be anything from a bad maf...to something as simple as a hose blew off...but the guy told him it was going to cost 1,000 to fix the car...now the car does have 100k miles on it....now as it being rebuilt...im not positive on that aspect

maybe he meant lower intake manifold gasket .which had probems from factory because they were made from a paper composite, which changed to metal gaskets later

I'm not going to knock you but never trust a previous owner when it comes to stuff like this. The bottom line is that they're wanting to sell the car.

I would advise you to take it to any of the norcal shops listed in the regional forum here and have one of them look at it.

The black smoke could be any number of things. By them telling you not to start it makes me think it's worst case scenerio. Take it to one of the norcal shops and have them look at it.

The hardest part about buying an RX7 that isn't runing right is trying to decipher the previous owners (probably limited and biased) knowledge and what actually is going on. A reputable shop can put you in the ballpark.

Sounds like great advice. You could be spinning your wheels a long time and spend a lot of time and money heading in wrong directions. Have a pro get you started. It will be money well spent.

yeah im getting the funds available now to rebuild the engine...i have heard from a source that you couldn't technically put some ATF and it would clean out the internals nicely...does anyone have any hard evidence on this...I've heard of it before on piston engines but never heard of it being done on a rotary...once again advice is awesome...thanks everyone for the help
