Question Question about Vaccum Chamber

I managed to get my car out of limp mode today after fixing a few solenoids. I also discovered I had a leak in the vaccum chamber.

Due to the fact I didn't have a spare one and ordering one would take a few weeks, I tried to glue it together as a temporary fix and put everything back together.

The car can actually be driven now but its hard to boost. If I take off and put the foot down it doesn't generate boost. If I let go of the gas then stab it again then I boost perfectly.

Question is would fixing this vaccum chamber solve this?

Your symptoms are that of a leaking check valve or leaking chamber. Where was it broken? How did you use glue to fix it?

i gues these symptoms appear because it cant store vacuum for some period of time. when you let off, the engine generates huge amount of vacuum which is enough for turbo control actuator and other vacuum activated valves.

Well the thing is I personally didn't do the work. I was just told by my mates mechanic that the chamber was leaking and they even tried to put a mitty vac into it but it just wouldn't hold pressure.

Another question is I've managed to locate another vaccum chamber so how hard is it to get to so that I can replace it? Do I need to take off the UIM?

Vacuum chamber is behind the p/s and a/c attaching bracket. Gotta take them all off. Nothing to it after that.

Sorry I'm referring to the other chamber as high lighted in this diagram.

Sorry for the confusion guys. Its a manual Series 8. I'm only going off what I was told but this morning I had a look at the chamber and it looks perfectly normal. Whether the mechanic was pulling my leg or not I'm not sure.

I looked at that diagram thinking there was another vaccum chambers but there should be only one right?

Update: I had a closer look just then with a light and it seems the bloke forgot to plug the vaccum hose back into the chamber thats behind the p/s. Not sure if this will make a difference.

There should only be one hose going into this chamber?

Yes, that one is for auto's only. Here's one which shows it a little better (and explains the shading):

Vacuum plugs into the solenoid box. These appear to be even more unreliable than the hard line system once exposed to heat. The bloke in WA, can't think of his name, who experienced all sorts of dramas with his system replaced the black box itself to cure it apparently, believe it was a sealing issue between the upper and lower halves ~ 13-140 and 20-4B0 in diagram.

Cheers Mahjik & Bill.

I've managed to source one of these units but is there any way to remove it without having to take off the P/S etc?

Yes, one hose, and it's very important.

If you try to remove the vac chamber I think you at least need to remove the alternator.
