Question about oil seals on turbo
I think I may have found a set of turbos, the housing is good, the guy said they need the "oil seals from the turbine shaft".
Does this mean it needs a new cartridge or is it an external seal? Any ideas will be great, thanks.

These are the internal oil seals that sit on the turbine shaft. They keep the oil from being dispelled into the compressor housing .... and thereby resulting in HUGE clouds of smoke. (Mental note for Spyhunter build-up ...) From all the conversations I've had with various turbo rebuilders during my turbo troubles, apparently these seals are very hard to come by. I'm not sure whether the Turbo City kits come with them either. The seals are part of the 'cartridge', although the Hitachi HT series doesn't fit the typical definition of turbo cartridges.
Ask the guy to send you pictures of the seals and the housing. It is possible to reuse the old seals; however, highly recommended against. The exhaust housing/port is the other problem spot with the turbos. Older, abused turbos will have large cracks in the exhaust housing which are technically repairable; but again highly recommended against. Hope this helps.
