QUESTION about BNR Stage 3 turbos....bryan, rich, stepen??
hey guys
just curious...how much are the manifolds machined out to allow for more flow on the bnr set?
I know that if you bore out the stock manifold that it will tend to crack prematurely (the stock set already cracks easy enough).
what is being done to prevent this on your sets?
WILL JETHOT COATING or similar help prevent this premature cracking from the heat?
just wondering

how are the problems with boost creep and spiking being eliminated through that tiny internal wastegate??
maybe this was addressed, but i didnt want to read through the 15 pages of ooohs and aaahs....

Well, the wg is ported. I wasnt counting that though, porting the wg is just a given. He even does that on stock rebuilds. It doesnt give any performance but it help control boost
I'm not haveing any prob controlling boost at all

i figured that they were ported....but still...its damn small - i thought y'all would still have boost control problems
what is being done about the cracking of the turbine housings where they connect to the manifold??

The price is $2000 with a good core. As for the specs to be honest he's prob not going to say much more than that they are upgraded twins with a custom conversion so that they will take modern seals....which helps them spool better as well as be more reliable. They come with a ported wg and you can have them cliped if you'd like.
Mine are NOT cliped, Rich's are so we should see pretty soon how much difference it makes.
suganuma - There isnt much that can be done about the stock manifold cracking.....or at least not at this price level. I'd imagine if he ever does do anything about the manifold, he'd prob just make a full replacement as an additional item you can purchase....but it will REALLY drive the cost up. He's wanting to keep them in a range everyone can afford.

i realize that...
just wondered if he was doing anything to help with that since the price is pretty low and reliability was an issue that was being addressed.
i am happy with my single setup, but when rich stops talking **** and actually wants to run, i'll be interested with the results.

Just for kicks and giggles, if my 155,250 mile OEM turbos decide to die on me (they are perfect right now) I will consider this. What upgrades do I need? I have power FC, 1200CC secondaries, highflow fuel pump, etc. Thanks.
I don't see any link to the stage 3 on his web site and I don't know what hardware is required.

OK I want to get in on this action too. I think this is a great revolution for the RX7 community to have powerful twin turbos for the 7. A couple questions...
1. Will all other stock twin turbo aftermarket accesory parts carry over, i.e pettit intake, greddy 2 row IC for stock twins?
2. I'am not to far along ont he mod list but with the basic bolton's, exhaust, intake, IC, with out injector upgrades and PFC as of yet, can I still run the BNR's and at what boost will I be limited to with and without PFC?
3. Say as in question number 2 and throw in 1300cc injectors and PFC, what psi will I be able to push with that set up?
4. Is there an oil issues as with the M2's(although that issue is fixed by now)?
Sorry for the confusing questions. I'am sure these will answer other peoples questions as well.

IMO Jet Hot coating the manifold ought to help at least a bit. It would keep more of the heat flowing out the exhaust rather than soaking in the manifold thereby causing weakness.

1. They are basically stock twins that are milled out for a different compressor wheel and the internals are much different. From the outside with the intake on you'd never know they were anything other than bone stock twins.....this means EVERYTHING bolts up just like it does to the stockers.
2. Personally I wouldnt run them without the ability to dial in more fuel and less timing...which basically means a standalone.....This isnt to say a Pettit ecu or similar wont work. It hasnt been tested, you can install them with any ecu you want including stock but the first time you drive it better be on the dyno to get a/f testing done. They might be ok with a Pettit unlimited chip at a low boost level like 10-12.
3. You'd be able to run as much as your injectors/pump will alow. You could prob run upward of 15psi or so I'd imagine but thats just a estimate. I'm not sure when 550/1300 Walbro pump runs out....it might be enough to run 17ish but with very little margin of error.
4. We did resticted the oil feed on my set and they seem to be fine. I dont think Rich's were resticted at all and they seem to need it a little. Its no big deal. The stock oil feed lines have that big hollow bolt that the oil flows thru. All Brian does it weld it up then drill a new smaller hole in it. He'll prob start doing them all like mine were done.
Hope that helps,
STEPHEN

Okay..since we're talking about this...how new do the turbos need to be..
Could I take my stockers and get them rebuilt, even if they've got 98k miles one them?
Would there be problems with this, or would they function alright?

They should be ok unless you've ever busted a apex seal. Normally if you busted a apex seal it will take the trubo out with it. You'd never know unless you fully disassemble the turbo.
You can use them as a core for a rebuild/upgrade though. If there are any parts that are bad they will just charge you for replacements.

Wow...
Maybe I won't have to shell out for a brand new turbo after all..
Only bad part of it all, is that rebuilt turbos are supposedly crap, and that the BNR thing hasn't been substantially proven yet...can't wait for those results!
I need to do some more reading on this subject...thanks!!!

What do you think would be BS??? There are 2 very long term respected forum members (me and Rich) running them, we've been around for years now. I've got a dyno sheet and a time slip to both back it up. Either its putting out numbers you want or its not....its pretty much that simple.
Not much more anyone can do man...short of you taking it trip to Birmingham, Al to ride in my car.
There are a quite a few people that have rode in my car and Steve Kan (Pluto) tuned it.
It doesnt get much more "proven" than that

Its just that we have been waiting for what seems like forever for someone to get good #'s for the BNR or M2 sets. I hope its true. I'll keep an open mind, Remember I'm not CALLING BS, Im just a natural skeptic.

You going to get your manifold that you send in back. He's not going to replace the manifolds.
They cost a fortune, if your is in really bad shape try finding a used set of blow twins with a decent manifol for around $150.
And, I'm not trying to be ugly about it or nothing....I understand people are skeptics but you did say......"If I knew for sure that this isn't BS, I buy them today" so I mean it is understandable that I thought you were implying that you didnt trust the results or whatever.
No big deal though, sometimes its hard to get your point accross online
I'll try to answer any questions I can, so you guys keep it coming.

ZeroBanger- You have seen the other threads haven't you??? With my dyno sheet and timeslip???
You mentioned you'd been waiting forever to see results so thought maybe you havent seen the threads.
This one has a timeslip....the mph is 125

This one has the dyno sheet

Anyway, just thought I'd throw those up there incase you havent seen them.

I'd send them back, and just get a new set anyway.
And yes , I HOPING that the stage III's have the power they you guys say and I'm hoping that they last more than 5K miles.
I'm really glad you are sharing your results with us. Anytime I have dynoed (such as my midpipe VS highflow dyno) or when I did my intake/trap experiments I always share with the forum. So please don't take it personally, its just after EVERYONE that ever had the BNR turbo's they could not dyno or just could not go to the track and all of them had problems getting them to work and when some of them dynoed Cap Bill.....KiwkRX7 (I think, sorry if I'm misquoting), they got no power gains from them. I understand those may have been stage II I guess.
So when is BNR going to put them forsale on the web site? I still only see stage I and II.
