Ques. for those who fixed snapped lock cable

Hey

I had an aftermarket alarm/central locking system installed last October. Recently noticed my drivers door not locking - due to a snapped lock cable. The actuator was connected to the interior lock switch and the sharp snapping action eventually stressed and snapped the cable.

I received my new secondhand lock mechanism w/cables attached in the mail yesterday. If I just install it, I imagine it would snap the cable again in a few weeks/months.

What did any of you guys who fixed this problem do to prevent it happening in the future? Did you disconnect the central locking actuator, get a new actuator, or modify the existing actuator so it won't happen again?

I'm thinking of trying to reduce the travel of the actuator, or use some springs / additional linkages to smooth the actuators action out a bit.

this is amazing, I'm right in the middle of fixing this problem.
My drivers side door lock cable and handle snapped so I have had to rig up a new arm piece ( bit that connects cable to handle) to run the wire to, Its a right *** of a job but I have the arm setup just about right, all I have to do is connect the cable to it somehow.

I think the existing system is fine for quite a few k's, I dont think you would be changing in a few months anyway but I agree that if you do have to fix it that you make it more sterdy so you never have the problem again.

You know the real problem though? CRAPPY PLASTIC INTERIOR!!!!

From what I've read on here the stock system is fine untill you install an aftermarket actuator to drive the lock mechanism. If not done right, it can stress and snap the lock cable, which is what has happened in my case. The travel of the actuator (which acted on the interior lock switch) pulled the cable further than it wanted to go, repeatedly stressing the cable untill it snapped.

I want to install my recently acquired secondhand cable/lock mechanism and hook it back up to my actuator, but if I do that I'll be back where I started last October. Which means in a few months it will probably snap.

SO I want to look at putting a spring on the actuator (or maybe even the cable) to smooth it's action out, or somehow reduce it's travel so it won't snap the cable quite so tight.

Hopefully someone has done something like this and can give me some pointers.
