Nope. Rick is legit and the smog shop he uses is usually quite picky about the rules. If YellowR1's car passed smog through that route, then it legitimately passed smog. Rick does a lot of work figuring out why cars aren't passing smog, even non RX-7s.

what are various price ranges for porting an engine? how hard is it to do? what all is required? I might be purchasing a spare engine in the near future...is it something I could do on my own?

-I got a monster street port done to my freshly rebuilt 13B
-brand new rotor housings
-lapped side housings
-E-shaft oil modification
-match ported LIM & UIM
all and all I payed over 4K!! which was well worth it.

And I forgot to mention I took apart the entire engine myself

??? You can change the emissions by the timing and the amount of fuel you add or subtract. Stick a tail pipe sniffer in the exhaust and start adding fuel and watch what happens .

They don't Damon. Nothing was dumped into the gas tank whatsoever. All it takes is tuning and a good cat. They even pass with a base map from a PFS purple.

No. That is entirely inaccurate. Rick's Rotary knows these cars very well & knows the culprits that cause CA smog failure (one being the Check Engine light not coming on at start-up for those with a Power FC - which he remedies with a chip capacitor install onto the PCB behind the dash which allows for the 5 sec Check Engine light to function once again).

I know Rick & he & my brother are the only guys I allow to touch my FD for the stuff I'm too busy to mess with.

A street port does NOT inhibit passing CA smog. Period. In fact, I still had a little race gas in my tank (making it a little more rich than std 91 octane - it was at about 94 octane at the time....which can contribute to getting your O2 sensor dirty - which is why I had it replaced).

Rick is a top notch guy & I'd recommend him to anyone for not only normal wrenching (for those of you who don't like getting dirty under the cowl), but for diagnosing & fixing anything with your RX-7 to ensure it runs CLEAN.

Rynberg, you are correct my friend!

See ya,
-Matt

Wait, so if you have a Power FC your check engine doesn't function?? How much does he charge for this chip and how hard is it to install? (This chip makes the check engine light function right?)

Compilez,

Yes, that is correct. It is a unique CA smog requirement that your Check Engine light function at start up (over regulated POS state ). So, the labor & install was peanuts (like $80 or so - pretty fair).

Your are in Georgia. You should PM Mr. RX-7 TT for an engine rebuild & port job my man so you can drive your FD .

See ya,
-Matt

you don't need a chip, just run a wire from the one of the other lights(I think I used ABS) to the check engine one, it's so simple. When you put the ignition to on, all the lights turn on including the check engine.

It was a logical assumption given the frequency of such things occuring. Rick's just really good at what he does...

I'm going to rebuild myself (I finally got it on jack stands and drained the oil and coolant, getting ready to pull maybe on Sunday) and there is a local guy that I may have do the porting.

A good cat will work wonders. I passed smog with a partially blown engine a few months ago. I took it to two different places and passed the emissions part of the test with some breathing room.

The ignition failure is due to the lumpy idle common with blown engines but as you can see, there is some breathing room for modifications and/or less than ideal running conditions if your cat is in proper working order. The following day I took my FD to another test only shop and passed (after I upped the idle to smoothen things out).
