Proper odometer function

I'm finishing up putting the wiring back together on my '93, and I'm not sure how the odometer is supposed to function. The ECU is not currently connected, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. When I turn the car on, the odometer lights up, but no mileage is displayed. Does displaying the mileage require something special? I thought the mileage was stored inside the gauge cluster.

For reference, there is one thing that I haven't connected that I can think of, which is a metal box that connects somewhere in the passenger footwell. I think it has a yellow connector.

Other than that, I think everything is connected.

Yeah, it didn't work before either.

Do I just replace the cluster?

Um, for some reason it started working. I apparently had 65k on my old shell.

Odd.
