Price quote for service.. Am I getting screwed? Help!

Hey guys, I just took my car in a couple days ago because my clutch was acting up... Turns out it was just a pressure line that was leaking, so not a big deal there. But, I also need to have them perform the 60k mile service, and they also informed me that there are some additional things that need to be serviced. Front and rear brake pads, rotate the rotors, oil pan gasket leak, rear differential leak, and worn rear bushing. All of which I was somewhat aware of already, so they didn't just make them up out of the blue, I just didn't know the extent of the repairs. They quoted me at $1450 for everything, the big ones being 400 for the 60k service, 400 for the brakes/rotor rotating, and 300 for the oil pan gasket (which supposedly takes 4 hours of labor to do). Is this unreasonable? Or about right? I don't have the facilities or tools to do the repairs myself.

rotate the rotors? Do you/they mean turn the rotors to get a good clean smooth surface to seat the new pads on?Sounds pretty reasonable for that much stuff. Beware of dealerships though. They usually don't do very good work on the Rx7's. But if you trust them then Your call.Good luck! Sorry I don't know of any speacialty shops in that area.

If you aren't willing or can't do it yourself (whether it's lack of tools or time), then you have to pay whatever they want....

It's not a dealership, just a local shop... I've taken it there before for general maintenance and they seem to do a good job, I know a couple mechanics there too. As far as I know they're the only local shop that's ever worked on a 3rd gen before, heh. I just wanted to know if it was a fair price so I'd know if I should shop around or something... *shrugs*

Well that doesn't really sound too bad. They are right, the oil pan is a bitch.

I wouldn't bother with turning the rotors unless they seem warped.

If they place can do the job right, don't worry about the price. Good work and completed in a timely manner should be your first concerns.

Cheap work isn't always good work.

Drive across IA and come visit me. My time isn't as valuable as they think theirs is.

Did the $1450 include the diff seal and the bushings?

Not too bad of a deal if they can guarantee the oil pan won't leak again. They can be lil' bastards sometimes (the oil pan ).

From what I understand it includes all parts and labor... I wouldn't have a problem driving it if I could, but I can't get it out of first gear.

i think you got screwed on the oilpan! only way you can do oilpan is to yank engine or to drop the subframe.

also, wtf is rotor brakes/rotor rotating. i never heard of anyone doing this before, i mean why would you need to? you could have bought new rotors or pads for that much.

Yanking the engine or dropping the subframe would be quite a bit of labor... If that's what they have to do, then 4 hours of labor sounds about right to me.

By rotating the rotors I assume they just mean adjusting for any warp or wear they have. Pads are 70 for front and rear I believe, so that's 280 in pads alone.. Rotors I believe are about $80 a piece for front, 100 for rear. Prices are according to mazdaformance.com...

Pads come in sets, front or rear, so your only looking at ~$140 for pads all together.

I think most people would agree with this statement:

"If you can't work on a car yourself it is very expensive to own an RX7!"

As an owner you must understand this by now!

If you are depending on someone else to perform all the work on your car, even the most basic (which it seems you are since you pay someone else to change your oil) then you should consider yourself fortunate if you can even find a rotary mechanic that you trust.

Suck it up, pay the man, and start saving for your next car servicing bill!
